(ABC News: Jake Grant)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Without the incentive, I&#8217;d likely stop diving for urchins \u2014 it wouldn&#8217;t be financially viable,&#8221;  he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The Tasmanian Abalone Council has yet to receive an answer on the Centrostephanus Subsidy Program as well, but it&#8217;s hoping for a positive announcement soon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Meanwhile, researchers and fishers alike are disappointed that a key recommendation from a 2023 Senate report for an immediate $55 million investment over five years to address the <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-04-08\/sea-urchin-federal-government-response-criticised\/106533162\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">long-spined sea urchin problem was knocked back<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Dean Lisson from the Tasmanian Abalone Council said divers are gobsmacked by the disparity in Commonwealth and state funding for the Great Barrier Reef compared to the Great Southern Reef.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Their investment in the Southern Reef, compared to the Great Barrier Reef is bugger all,&#8221;  Mr Lisson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Both scientists and fishers agree that the anomaly urchin could have dire consequences for Tasmania&#8217;s underwater environment and some of its most valuable fisheries.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Man Holding a Sea Urchin\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/856a2e62ea6059aba307e140d10fd055.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Dr Keane said the world&#8217;s most valuable fishing grounds were at risk by the species&#8217; spread.
