\n\tMega-producers Jerry Bruckheimer<\/a> (F1) and Emma Thomas<\/a> (Oppenheimer) were grilled at CinemaCon<\/a> Wednesday over why they haven\u2019t signed an open letter in heavy circulation<\/a> calling on regulators to block the Paramount-Warner merger<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cFirst of all, I wasn\u2019t asked,\u201d Bruckheimer said in conversation with Puck\u2019s Matt Belloni. \u201cLook, I think the train has left the station. I think this is well on its way. You can sign all the petitions you want, but [the merger is] already being approved by European countries. It\u2019s happening. So there\u2019s not much we can do about it other than take [Paramount\u2019s] David [Ellison] at his word that he\u2019s going to make 30 movies [a year]<\/a>, and that would be fantastic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBruckheimer continued: \u201cI know David. I know he loves movies. That\u2019s why he got in this business. \u2026 He\u2019s very passionate about getting movies made, and he tries to make a lot of them. So why would he change from being an independent producer to putting two studios together and not make enough movies?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen Belloni noted the possibility that Democratic lawmakers might be able to at least delay the merger<\/a>, which has been discussed as potentially destructive to the entertainment business, Bruckheimer opined: \u201cThat would hurt the business if they delayed it. That would really hurt us because we want them making movies. We want them really to stretch out and make as many movies as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThomas added: \u201cI don\u2019t know that petitions are the right way to effect change, is my sort of honest opinion. I do think that people are right to be skeptical about this merger. We\u2019ve seen in the past that it doesn\u2019t always lead to what the people involved promised.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBruckheimer and Thomas\u2019s comments came at a time when over 3,000 prominent industry figures have come around to signing the open letter (read it below). The proposed $110 billion merger of Paramount and Warner Bros Discovery is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory clearances and approval by WBD shareholders. The latter group will vote on April 23 about whether to back to deal.<\/a><\/p>\n

\n\tThe producer pair were speaking at the CinemaCon panel on the Cinema United Filmmaker Leadership Council \u2014 a new filmmaking body advocating for and supporting the theatrical moviegoing experience, with which both producers are involved. Michael O\u2019Leary, President and CEO of Cinema United, also spoke.<\/p>\n

\n\tOf course, even with what Bruckheimer and Thomas said about the open letter, much of the 45-minute conversation oriented around how the business has changed for the worse \u2014 with the advent of streaming, mass consolidation, unexpected factors like the pandemic and double strike and more \u2014 and possible solutions to the challenges the industry faces.<\/p>\n

Asked about his worst fears for the business, Bruckheimer said: \u201cThat we lose more studios. You know, consolidation hurts. If [Warner Bros. and Paramount] make the 30 movies, that\u2019s great. But look, if we lost one studio, we picked up Amazon. So there\u2019s always somebody else that comes in, like A24. \u2026 If there\u2019s people that want to go see movies and want to go to theaters, an exhibitor would pop up to fill that void. \u2026 If we get back to the habit of, there\u2019s an interesting movie you want to see every single weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThomas said her greatest fear is \u201cdisruption for disruption\u2019s sake,\u201d admitting, \u201cWhen I look at what\u2019s happened over the last few years, I have not seen a great deal of logic in the decisions that have been made.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe asked: \u201cWhere are we now? Our business is kind of a mess, in a way that it hasn\u2019t been, and I think that\u2019s because the profit motive and the investment in the theatrical business has sort of exited the picture. Look, there\u2019s so many things wrong with the corporate world at the moment, in terms of the decisions that are being made that benefit a small number of people and nobody else.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBelloni joked that she could just come out and acknowledge she was speaking out about Warner\u2019s David Zaslav and his massive M&A-influenced pay package,<\/a> which is a big subject of conversation these days.<\/p>\n

\n\tThomas said, \u201cI\u2019m trying to be diplomatic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe added, \u201cI just think that we\u2019ve got to get back to taking the longer-term view, investing in the infrastructure of our business and being realistic about the ways that, yeah, it\u2019s a risky business. Sometimes movies work, sometimes they don\u2019t. But the only way we\u2019re actually going to continue to be able to make movies that have the best chances that they can have is to keep that pipeline going, to keep putting movies in theaters, and to be rigorous about making sure that we are giving them the best chance that they can [have].\u201d<\/p>\n

As filmmakers, documentarians, and professionals across the movie and television industry, we write to express our unequivocal opposition to the proposed Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger.<\/p>\n

This transaction would further consolidate an already concentrated media landscape, reducing competition at a moment when our industries\u2014and the audiences we serve\u2014can least afford it. The result will be fewer opportunities for creators, fewer jobs across the production ecosystem, higher costs, and less choice for audiences in the United States and around the world. Alarmingly, this merger would reduce the number of major U.S. film studios to just four.<\/p>\n

Our industry is already under severe strain, in large part due to prior waves of consolidation. We have witnessed a steep decline in the number of films produced and released, alongside a narrowing of the kinds of stories that are financed and distributed. Increasingly, a small number of powerful entities determine what gets made\u2014and on what terms\u2014leaving creators and independent businesses with fewer viable paths to sustain their work.<\/p>\n

Media consolidation has accelerated the disappearance of the mid-budget film, the erosion of independent distribution, the collapse of the international sales market, the elimination of meaningful profit participation, and the weakening of screen credit integrity.<\/p>\n

Together, these factors threaten the sustainability of the entire creative community. That includes endangering the professional lives of the tens of thousands of workers who help make up that community in predominantly small businesses and independent companies embedded in local economies and communities nationwide.<\/p>\n

We are deeply concerned by indications of support for this merger that prioritize the interests of a small group of powerful stakeholders over the broader public good. The integrity, independence, and diversity of our industry would be grievously compromised.<\/p>\n

Competition is essential for a healthy economy and a healthy democracy. So is thoughtful regulation and enforcement. Media consolidation has already weakened one of America\u2019s most vital global industries\u2014one that has long shaped culture and connected people around the world.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, someone is doing something about all this. California Attorney General Rob Bonta and his colleagues in other states are reportedly<\/a> scrutinizing the merger and considering legal action to block it. We are grateful for their leadership, and stand ready to support all efforts to preserve competition, protect jobs, and ensure a vibrant future for our industry, for American culture, and for our single most significant export.<\/p>\n
