{"id":401150,"date":"2026-04-16T06:38:15","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T06:38:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/401150\/"},"modified":"2026-04-16T06:38:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T06:38:15","slug":"why-are-prices-so-low-in-spain-when-ireland-has-the-most-expensive-electricity-in-europe-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/401150\/","title":{"rendered":"Why are prices so low in Spain when Ireland has the most expensive electricity in Europe? \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The oil and gas shock caused by the US-Israeli attack on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iran\">Iran<\/a> and Tehran\u2019s closure of the Strait of Hormuz has caused the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/energy-costs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/energy-costs\">cost of electricity<\/a> to sharply diverge in Europe, with some countries cushioned while others feel the pain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Tuesday, the cost of producing one megawatt-hour (MWh) of energy was \u20ac169.15 in Ireland, the highest in Europe. It was \u20ac149.04 in Italy, \u20ac138.89 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/germany\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/germany\/\">Germany<\/a>, and \u20ac88.23 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/france\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/france\/\">France<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/spain\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/spain\/\">Spain<\/a> it was \u20ac44.35. Since the outbreak of the crisis, Spain has had the cheapest or close to the cheapest prices in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/european-union\">European Union<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">This is a new development. Spain was badly affected by the last gas price crisis, in 2022, which was caused by Russia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/ukraine-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/ukraine-war\/\">invasion of Ukraine<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The difference since then, according to energy analysts and the Spanish government, is the amount of renewable energy now in the Spanish energy system and, crucially, a reduction in dependence on gas. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s not by chance,\u201d Spanish prime minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pedro-sanchez\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pedro-sanchez\/\">Pedro S\u00e1nchez<\/a> told reporters recently. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s because there has been a consistent commitment by the Spanish government over the last eight years to be at the forefront of the renewable energy roll-out, therefore protecting our economies, our homes, our industries, our workers and companies from shocks such as this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Tuesday, 65 per cent of Spain\u2019s power came from renewable sources, compared with 43 per cent across 2022. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Just 0.2 per cent of total energy produced in Spain on Tuesday was from gas turbines, according to figures from its energy grid (15 per cent was from nuclear).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">By comparison in Ireland, 40 per cent of electricity was generated by renewables in 2024, according to the CSO. Gas generated 41 per cent of electricity in Ireland that year, at times peaking to as high as 83 per cent, according to data from Gas Networks Ireland.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Wind turbines used to generate electricity in Burgos, northern Spain. Because it can be switched on and off easily, gas power kicks in to \u201ctop up\u201d the available energy during surges in demand. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Under the marginal pricing system of the EU\u2019s electricity market, the most expensive type of energy source sets the price for all electricity sold that hour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">That means energy systems that need to resort to gas frequently \u2013 such as Ireland\u2019s \u2013 pay scorchingly high prices when the cost of gas surges. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Italy, which has a similar energy mix to Spain but a much heavier reliance on gas, is likewise experiencing some of the highest electricity costs in Europe, putting the government of Giorgia Meloni under pressure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Yet Spain appears to have reached a tipping point where it has enough consistent supply elsewhere that it needs to resort to gas much less often, according to analysts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/2026\/03\/20\/spain-says-the-sun-shields-it-from-rising-energy-costs-is-that-true\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spain says the sun shields it from rising energy costs. Is that true?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cSpain were already using a lot of wind and solar back in 2022. But it seems to have crossed a threshold now where it\u2019s providing very high shares of electricity in more and more hours of the day,\u201d said Chris Rosslowe, a senior analyst at energy think tank Ember.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cIt\u2019s pushing gas off the system almost entirely, at least in the main electricity market, which is then lowering prices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The breakneck pace of renewable energy development in Spain has not been entirely without teething problems. The widespread blackout experienced across the Iberian Peninsula last year had several different causes, but one was that investments in the energy grid had not kept pace with the rapid change, according to Rosslowe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Bear in mind that wholesale energy prices are not the same as household energy bills.
