{"id":401420,"date":"2026-04-16T10:32:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T10:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/401420\/"},"modified":"2026-04-16T10:32:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T10:32:09","slug":"amazon-enters-agreements-for-nine-australian-renewable-projects-to-power-datacentres-amazon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/401420\/","title":{"rendered":"Amazon enters agreements for nine Australian renewable projects to power datacentres | Amazon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Amazon has entered power agreements with nine new renewable projects in New South Wales and Victoria, as the technology company seeks to source renewable power for its datacentre operations in Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The nine deals, including one windfarm and 10 solar and battery projects, will take the amount of renewable energy Amazon is sourcing in Australia from 430MW to nearly 1GW.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The power purchase agreements are contracts between energy providers and datacentre operators to meet the expected demands of their centres. Amazon has entered into agreements for more than 20 projects in Australia as it aims to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2040.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">These include power from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2019\/jan\/13\/new-victorian-wind-farm-could-provide-10-of-states-energy\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Victoria\u2019s Golden Plains 2<\/a>, the largest windfarm in Australia, which began operating in 2024. It also includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/2021\/may\/17\/australias-first-fully-renewable-hydrogen-valley-slated-for-nsw-coal-heartland\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the solar and battery storage farm<\/a> in Muswellbrook in New South Wales, which is being built on a former coalmine site.<\/p>\n<p><a data-link-name=\"standard link button Primary\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" class=\"dcr-svb9qg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for the Breaking News Australia email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The funding for battery sites is the first time Amazon has invested in solar-battery hybrid projects outside the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Matt O\u2019Rourke, Amazon Web Services\u2019 head of infrastructure and energy policy in Australia and New Zealand, said the battery investment would help stabilise the grid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cContributing utility-scale batteries so they can get charged up when the sun is shining and the wind is blowing, and then de-charge during the peak times when the sun might not be shining and the wind might not be blowing,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s really about just trying to strengthen the stability of the grid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">There is growing pushback in Australia to datacentre construction as the country is encouraged to fast-track new developments to meet demands for artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A NSW parliament inquiry this month heard from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/apr\/04\/sydney-councils-fear-new-datacentres-could-cause-blackouts-block-housing-and-affect-locals-health\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a number of Sydney councils<\/a> which had raised concerns about the environmental impact, as well as power and water use for planned datacentres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">While Amazon promotes how much renewable energy it is buying in Australia, the company would not say how much its datacentres would consume in the electricity grid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">O\u2019Rourke said: \u201cWe don\u2019t break down the power consumption at the individual country level.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cIf you think about it from an economy-wide perspective, all of the datacentres in Australia collectively consume the same amount of electricity as all of the shopping centres, but the datacentres are \u2026 facilitating new renewable energy coming into the grid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The comparison to shopping centres is one that has been favoured by the datacentres industry in Australia in recent months, with Data Centres Australia using the same statistic. It originated from a <a href=\"https:\/\/mandalapartners.com\/uploads\/Data-Centres-as-Enabling-Infrastructure.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mandala report<\/a> from November 2025 that was commissioned by AirTrunk, Amazon Web Services, CDC Data Centres and NextDC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The report was aimed at addressing growing concerns <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/dec\/04\/thirsty-work-how-the-rise-of-massive-datacentres-strains-australias-drinking-water-supply\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">over water and electricity use at datacentres<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">O\u2019Rourke said the partners with whom Amazon had signed the agreements had \u201cdone extensive community consultation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said: \u201cWe are focused on making sure that all of the community can benefit from the renewable energy that becomes available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Labor opts for political solution to emissions reduction with Oprah-style target \u2013 video\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/7790.jpg\" height=\"259\" width=\"460\" class=\"dcr-1qi2at0\"\/>Labor opts for political solution to emissions reduction with Oprah-style target \u2013 video<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The chair of the Superpower Institute and former competition regulator chair, Rod Sims, said last month the issue with many power purchase agreements entered into by datacentre companies was that they were not bringing in additional power \u2013 just supplying power for datacentres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said: \u201cThat\u2019s my central concern, and we don\u2019t have the market signals to give the incentive to people to actually build renewable energy, and that\u2019s why I think we\u2019re just not having enough focus on the urgent need for a carbon price.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cNo carbon price \u2013 the construction of renewables just won\u2019t meet the demand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Amazon entered into eight of the nine agreements announced on Thursday when the projects were in the development stage, the company said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Dr Hao Wang, a senior lecturer in Monash University\u2019s data science and AI department, said datacentres investing in renewable energy through power purchase agreements was a good thing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He said: \u201cIf it\u2019s adding new renewables, it\u2019s definitely welcome [but] I think we need to have better transparency. [We need to] try to get a better sense of how much [datacentres] really consume. Not only the total amount but the temporal pattern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Wang said operators should be upfront about how much centres use in peak demand times. \u201cWe are in the dark.
