{"id":402058,"date":"2026-04-16T18:42:20","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T18:42:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/402058\/"},"modified":"2026-04-16T18:42:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T18:42:20","slug":"judge-adjourns-murder-case-hearing-after-man-scalded-with-hot-water-at-courtroom-door-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/402058\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge adjourns murder case hearing after man scalded with hot water at courtroom door \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A man suffered burn injuries after having hot water thrown on him at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tyrone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/tyrone\/\">Co Tyrone<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/\">courthouse<\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"> A row broke out in Strabane Magistrates Court in advance of a committal hearing in a murder case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An ambulance attended the courthouse after a man was scalded on his face, neck and shoulder after being doused in boiling water at a courtroom door. He was taken to hospital for treatment. The assailant is understood to have had a kettle that was boiled elsewhere in the building. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Police Service of Northern Ireland (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/police-service-of-northern-ireland-psni\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/police-service-of-northern-ireland-psni\/\">PSNI<\/a>) said it received a report about the incident shortly before 11am.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe suspect is reported to have run away from the scene, and police efforts are ongoing to identify, locate and apprehend the suspect,\u201d the PSNI said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The incident happened as a hearing in relation to the death of Stephen Holmes (31), who suffered serious injuries during an alleged incident in Strabane on February 3rd, 2025, and died in hospital days later, was due to take place. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dylan McCrossan (32), from Beechmount Village, Strabane, was initially charged with inflicting grievously bodily harm and was subsequently brought back to court and charged with murder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">When a committal hearing to transfer the case for trial was due to take place on Thursday, a scuffle broke out at the rear of the court. District Judge Alana McSorley immediately halted the proceedings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A court official dashed into the courtroom seconds later and grabbed a jug of water from one of the benches.
