{"id":40261,"date":"2025-09-24T07:56:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-24T07:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/40261\/"},"modified":"2025-09-24T07:56:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T07:56:08","slug":"booker-prize-chairman-laments-poor-quality-of-entries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/40261\/","title":{"rendered":"Booker prize chairman laments poor quality of entries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The Booker prize jury chair has bemoaned the quality of many entrants for the annual literary award, saying judges had often wondered \u201cwhy we had been asked to read\u201d some of the submitted novels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Roddy Doyle, the first former Booker prizewinner to subsequently chair the jury, said he and the other four jurors had discarded all but 31 books from the original 153 to discuss before deciding which should be on their longlist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">He said many had not warranted discussion later, adding that he began to feel low when reading two bad books in a row because he had \u201csigned up\u201d to be a judge in order to read good books.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">There are regularly more than 150 \u201cliterary fiction\u201d titles in contention for the prize. He said that such were his reading responsibilities, one day he recorded only 17 steps on his pedometer \u201cand it took eight steps to the kettle from where I was sitting\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/booker-prize-2025-shortlist-books-winner-zss5sk6lz\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Who will win the 2025 Booker prize?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">He said that before a longlisting meeting with the other judges \u2014 the fellow writers Ayobami Adebayo and Kiley Reid, the critic Chris Power and the actress Sarah Jessica Parker \u2014 they had \u201cdecided 31 books were worth discussing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Although they had talked about each of the 153 submitted novels, he said: \u201cWe didn\u2019t say much about some of them and a very few we wondered why we had been asked to read them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Power said the bad books did have the benefit of highlighting the good ones. \u201cIf you read a few bad books in a row, which you could easily do in this process or [at least] not great books and then you read something quite good you suddenly got excited about it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Power said that under the judges\u2019 \u201ctraffic light system\u201d, green for good and red for bad, red could mean that a book was \u201cfine, just not something that you really think is worth pushing into the hands of readers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/best-books-2025-so-far-ranked-67cj980w2\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The best books of 2025 so far<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">However, he said that having \u201cmany reds\u201d among the 153 books did not mean that \u201cpublishing is in crisis\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The six books the judges eventually shortlisted for this year\u2019s prize include three by American novelists: Flashlight by Susan Choi, Audition by Katie Kitamura and The Rest of Our Lives by Ben Markovits.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Katie Kitamura at the International Festival of Rome, July 2022.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/\/2cdf4bd2-c6c7-4ce2-b88d-346a5818c206.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Katie Kitamura<\/p>\n<p>MARILLA SICILIA\/GETTY IMAGES<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The British author Andrew Miller is shortlisted for The Land in Winter along with the British-Hungarian David Szalay for Flesh. I want to read good books.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Doyle added that he was now fed up with small typefaces. \u201cIf they [the books] were all uniform and came in at 200 pages with a reasonable font it would be great. The font is my gripe though.<\/p>\n<p id=\"last-paragraph\" class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">\u201cOne book, which we liked, the font reminded me of the warning you get on the back of a pack of Panadol in 17 languages.
