{"id":402949,"date":"2026-04-17T06:18:15","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T06:18:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/402949\/"},"modified":"2026-04-17T06:18:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T06:18:15","slug":"i-was-desperate-to-get-my-hands-on-him","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/402949\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018I was desperate to get my hands on him\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI think all of the main characters in the story are just brilliantly complex,\u201d enthuses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/search\/?query=Fra%20Fee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/search\/?query=Fra%20Fee\">Fra Fee<\/a> of what attracted him to Unchosen, the new six-part <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/search\/?query=Netflix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/search\/?query=Netflix\">Netflix<\/a> thriller centred on The Fellowship of The Divine, a fictional modern-day religious cult based in England.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThese \u2018men of God\u2019 are going around holding their Bibles and preaching, and yet, behind closed doors, are behaving despicably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Co Tyrone-born actor gets up to all sorts of despicable acts himself as Sam, a mysterious Irish stranger who inveigles his way into the cloistered Christian community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It\u2019s a rigidly patriarchal sect led by strict, superficially good living preacher, Mr Phillips (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/search\/?query=Christoper%20Eccleston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/search\/?query=Christoper%20Eccleston\">Christoper Eccleston<\/a>) and his equally no-nonsense wife (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/search\/?query=Siobhan%20Finneran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/search\/?query=Siobhan%20Finneran\">Siobhan Finneran<\/a>), where members worship in fear of being cast-out &#8211; unchosen &#8211; for any transgression.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/entertainment\/england-footballer-chloe-kelly-says-having-own-barbie-doll-is-dream-come-true-JS6AU2QLJFLVFHQFJM5IAXSYWM\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"England footballer Chloe Kelly says having own Barbie doll is &#x2018;dream come true&#x2019;\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/NDNZXGQ3L5IVJB2FQSAQB6SUBI.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/entertainment\/pole-to-pole-with-will-smith-a-travel-show-with-a-hollywood-celebrity-that-will-surprise-amaze-and-delight-you-4MOGDA7OVRH47D4WXEWE2UQ73Q\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Pole to Pole with Will Smith: A travel show with a Hollywood celebrity that will surprise, amaze and delight you\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/F6XPJXLWHJBPFCFGLZNPEV6IOA.jpeg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">However, the way we percieve Fee\u2019s character is constantly changing throughout the Julie Gearey written and created show. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">At first, the charming yet enigmatic Sam is introduced to viewers as a hero via an act of bravery, and also as an object of lust for married cult member Rosie (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/search\/?query=Molly%20Windsor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/search\/?query=Molly%20Windsor\">Molly Windsor<\/a>) to project her \u2018sinful\u2019 desires upon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/arts\/2019\/11\/23\/news\/nothing-is-lost-in-translations-for-fra-fee-1772317\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/arts\/2019\/11\/23\/news\/nothing-is-lost-in-translations-for-fra-fee-1772317\/\">Nothing is lost in Translations for Dungannon star Fra Fee<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Unchosen\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/3Y673KVUAZCL3AAEBR26GJWYXQ.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/>Fra Fee and Asa Butterworth in Unchosen. PICTURE: NETFLIX <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A man on the run from a troubled past, Sam also appears vulnerable and in need of help himself, qualities which &#8211; along with physical attributes highighted by many bare-chested scenes &#8211; begin to tempt Rosie away from her unhappy marriage to tightly wound senior cult member, Adam (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/search\/?query=Asa%20Butterfield\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/search\/?query=Asa%20Butterfield\">Asa Butterfield<\/a>), who is struggling with his own repressed desires. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">As events escalate, viewers will see Sam involved in vigorous adultery, violent brawls and cold blooded murder while engaging in Machievellian manipulation, to the point where this initially beloved interloper is eventually denounced with the chilling words \u201cThe Devil walks among us!\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">However, Sam also has moments of extreme kindness and empathy, and even throws himself into acts of life-saving bravery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">So, is the character really evil, or just a ruthlessly pragmatic survivor fighting his own inner demons?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI mean, there\u2019s no doubt about it &#8211; Sam\u2019s actions are totally abhorrent and reprehensible,\u201d chuckles Fee, who has also explored his dark side of late with villainous roles in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/search\/?query=Marvel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/search\/?query=Marvel\">Marvel<\/a> series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/search\/?query=Hawkeye%20marvel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/search\/?query=Hawkeye%20marvel\">Hawkeye<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/search\/?query=Zack%20Snyder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/search\/?query=Zack%20Snyder\">Zack Snyder<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/search\/?query=Rebel%20Moon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/search\/?query=Rebel%20Moon\">Rebel Moon<\/a> films.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Unchosen\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/SON7PEGSAJAWRF5BTBCIE5FW34.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Sam (Fra Fee) is not as good as he first appears. And I think it would be such a disservice to Sam as a brilliantly written character to just label him as \u2018the bad guy\u2019 or the antagonist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019s a deeply passionate person and extremely intelligent. He is clearly, like, wired wrong, there\u2019s no doubt about that &#8211; no one can behave the way he does without there being something [psychological] going on. But a lot of it is trauma-induced as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI just loved all of his contradictions. I love that he kept me questioning his actions on a daily basis. Even when we were shooting, I never had him fully figured out, because actually, there\u2019s so much to like about Sam as well. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cHis need for repentance and atonement are legitimate, and he really wants to find peace, which is something that we can all relate to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI think all those complexities and contradictions were what really appealed. I hadn\u2019t come across a character like that in such a long time, and I was just desperate to to get my hands on him. It was a real thrill to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Unchosen\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/SPEJVUNXMBGE3IJJPTPFVGNLEU.jpeg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"400\"\/>Unchosen <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">I hadn\u2019t come across a character like Sam in such a long time &#8211; I was just desperate to to get my hands on him<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \u00a0Fra Fee<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Interestingly, Sam was originally written as being English, until the show-runners realised that introducing an \u2018exotic\u2019 Irishman into the mix would enhance the storytelling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Thus, Sam speaks in a version of the Dungannon man\u2019s own accent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cIn the first scripts, he had a soft northern English voice,\u201d explains Fee, who studied music at the University of Manchester and the Royal Academy of Music prior to landing his breakthrough screen role in the 2012 film version of stage hit Les Miserables.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cBut when they were assembling this cast, the main accent that the Fellowship seemed to have was this Midlands-y, northern English kind of thing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThat meant that my own accent was just brilliantly, audibly different from all of theirs. And because Sam comes from such a different place, I think it was perfect for him as the \u2018outsider\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Unchosen\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/S32PA72JA5GZZD2FUKS6WTH4AA.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Unchosen (Justin Downing\/Netflix) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/magazine\/entertainment\/2022\/03\/01\/news\/hawkeye-star-fra-fee-to-replace-eddie-redmayne-in-cabaret-2603079\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/magazine\/entertainment\/2022\/03\/01\/news\/hawkeye-star-fra-fee-to-replace-eddie-redmayne-in-cabaret-2603079\/\">Hawkeye star Fra Fee to replace Eddie Redmayne in Cabaret<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">While Fee says he is enjoying more opportunities to play characters in his own accent &#8211; including his acclaimed turns in last year\u2019s BBC series Lost Boys &amp; Fairies and Sophie Hyde\u2019s 2019 indie feature, Animals &#8211; he wasn\u2019t always so keen to sound like himself on screen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI had an aversion to acting in my own accent for some reason,\u201d admits Fee, who has also enjoyed critically lauded stage roles in the Sam Mendes-directed The Ferryman, Translations at the National Theatre and The Playhouse Theatre\u2019s revivial of Cabaret.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI really used to cringe at the sound of my own voice. I never thought that we had a particularly \u2018beautiful\u2019 accent, necessarily.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cCertainly, when I was starting out, it was much easier for me to play a different person if I just gave them a different voice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cBut in more recent years, I have actually really, really enjoyed acting in my own accent &#8211; and I can see the the advantages of it, because it\u2019s just one less thing to distance yourself from your essential core. He\u2019s just brilliant and I really got on with him as well. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m also a huge fan of Siobhan. Just one of the greatest actresses on television, without a doubt. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAsa and Molly are also phenomenal and have done such brilliant work in the past. It was really lovely for us younger cast members to have these two legendary figures of stage and screen with us, and we all got on so well. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cObviously, when you\u2019re doing such a dark story, it\u2019s very, very intense &#8211; but the time that we spent together off screen was just a complete joy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">As mentioned, Fee developed a real affection for the scheming, not to be trusted Sam &#8211; an emotional \u2018journey\u2019 he feels viewers will also experience when watching Unchosen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI really loved Sam a lot of the time,\u201d he tells me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI felt such empathy for him and an affection for him. I wanted to look after him.
