The condition, primarily linked to nutrient deficits, affects approximately 3% to 5% of individuals using the semaglutide-based treatment.<\/p>\n

Ozempic is an injectable prescription drug designed to manage blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes by increasing insulin release and slowing gastric emptying. While widely used for weight management, the resulting decrease in appetite can lead to significant calorie and vitamin reductions that impact hair follicle health<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dr. Mani Deepthi Dasari, a Consultant Endocrinologist at Apollo Hospitals in Bangalore, addressed the rising concerns regarding hair fall in an interview with Moneycontrol. She noted that while the phenomenon occurs, it is not a universal experience for all patients.<\/p>\n

“In 3 to 5% of the people, we can see the hair loss. It is not seen in all people. However, the hair loss caused by ozempic is usually temporary,” said Dr. Dasari.<\/p>\n

The specialist clarified that the hair loss is a physiological reaction to the speed of weight reduction and the subsequent lack of essential nutrients. This process involves the body shifting more hair follicles from the growth phase into resting and shedding phases.<\/p>\n

“It basically decreases your appetite. So, one side effect of rapidly losing weight is that you will experience nutritional deficiencies, because of reduced calorie intake. Loss of nutrients from your diet can stem some of hair-related concerns,” explained Dr. Dasari.<\/p>\n

Hormonal fluctuations during treatment also play a role in scalp health. Dr. Dasari pointed out that changes in thyroid and cortisol levels, which are common factors in hair struggles, can occur alongside the use of the GLP1 analogue.<\/p>\n

“A change can be seen in hormones like thyroid and cortisol. We all know that these two things are also the reasons why most people struggle with hair issues,” she said.<\/p>\n

The endocrinologist compared the condition to postpartum hair loss, emphasizing that the medication’s chemical structure is not the direct culprit. Recovery typically involves identifying and addressing specific deficiencies through supplementation.<\/p>\n

The clinical term for this type of temporary shedding is telogen effluvium. According to the expert, patients may need to replenish levels of iron, vitamin B12, and zinc to encourage regrowth.<\/p>\n

“When you take Ozempic, it may cause nutritional deficiency in body. As a result of that, one can see that the growth phase of hair may get shortened and there will be more of hair follicles in the resting phase and falling phase. This explains why hair loss happens,” told Dr. Dasari.<\/p>\n

Treatment focuses on comprehensive blood panels to find underlying anemias or vitamin gaps. If the shedding persists despite intervention, the specialist recommends seeking further evaluation from a dermatologist.<\/p>\n
