{"id":403503,"date":"2026-04-17T14:13:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T14:13:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/403503\/"},"modified":"2026-04-17T14:13:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T14:13:10","slug":"artemis-2s-heat-shield-seems-to-have-aced-its-trial-by-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/403503\/","title":{"rendered":"Artemis 2&#8217;s heat shield seems to have aced its trial by fire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-e5536a40-7078-4638-8329-defa8de26165\">Artemis 2&#8217;s return to Earth went a lot more smoothly than some folks had feared.<\/p>\n<p>The heat shield on Artemis 2&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Orion<\/a> capsule, which the crew named &#8220;Integrity,&#8221; was the topic of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/all-eyes-on-orions-heat-shield-artemis-2-astronauts-will-hit-earths-atmosphere-at-a-record-breaking-25-000-mph-on-april-10\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/all-eyes-on-orions-heat-shield-artemis-2-astronauts-will-hit-earths-atmosphere-at-a-record-breaking-25-000-mph-on-april-10\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/all-eyes-on-orions-heat-shield-artemis-2-astronauts-will-hit-earths-atmosphere-at-a-record-breaking-25-000-mph-on-april-10\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">considerable discussion<\/a> in the lead-up to the mission&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-launches-4-astronauts-to-the-moon-on-historic-artemis-2-voyage-a-lunar-leap-for-the-21st-century\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-launches-4-astronauts-to-the-moon-on-historic-artemis-2-voyage-a-lunar-leap-for-the-21st-century\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-launches-4-astronauts-to-the-moon-on-historic-artemis-2-voyage-a-lunar-leap-for-the-21st-century\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">April 10 splashdown<\/a> \u2014 for several years before that, in fact.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-e5536a40-7078-4638-8329-defa8de26165-2\">And it wasn&#8217;t just because <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">moon<\/a> missions come back to Earth at blistering speeds and experience blistering temperatures \u2014 in the neighborhood of 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit (2,800 degrees Celsius) \u2014 when they hit <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">our planet&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a>. There was also some disconcerting history to consider.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-e28aa8dc-4a68-4440-966e-d42567b936a5\">That history concerns <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-1-going-back-to-the-moon\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-1-going-back-to-the-moon\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-1-going-back-to-the-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 1<\/a>, which sent an uncrewed Orion to lunar orbit and back to Earth in late 2022. The mission was a success, but Orion&#8217;s 16.5-foot-wide (5 meters) heat shield \u2014 the largest of its kind ever flown \u2014 suffered <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/the-artemis-1-moon-mission-had-a-heat-shield-issue-heres-why-nasa-doesnt-think-it-will-happen-again-on-artemis-2\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/the-artemis-1-moon-mission-had-a-heat-shield-issue-heres-why-nasa-doesnt-think-it-will-happen-again-on-artemis-2\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/the-artemis-1-moon-mission-had-a-heat-shield-issue-heres-why-nasa-doesnt-think-it-will-happen-again-on-artemis-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more damage than expected<\/a> during its return trip through Earth&#8217;s atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>After a great deal of analysis and discussion, NASA decided to stick with the same heat shield design for <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 2<\/a>, a decision that drew objections from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7270557555267973120\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7270557555267973120\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">some in the spaceflight community<\/a>. (Image credit: NASA Office of Inspector General)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-13d12062-68e9-4180-812f-b3a717caa40e\">This adjustment apparently did the trick, for Integrity&#8217;s heat shield survived its trial by fire in good shape, according to Artemis 2 commander Reid Wiseman.<\/p>\n<p>He and his crewmates \u2014 NASA astronauts Victor Glover and Christina Koch and the Canadian Space Agency&#8217;s Jeremy Hansen \u2014 inspected Integrity shortly after the capsule&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-2-astronauts-return-to-earth-ending-historic-moon-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-2-astronauts-return-to-earth-ending-historic-moon-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/artemis-2-astronauts-return-to-earth-ending-historic-moon-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">April 10 splashdown<\/a>. And the vehicle passed that eye test, according to Wiseman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Certainly when we went up to the vehicle, there was a little bit of char loss on what&#8217;s called the shoulder, which is kind of where the heat shield meets the structure of the cone shape of the spacecraft,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But the bottom \u2014 we leaned under and looked at the bottom of that thing, and for four humans just looking at the heat shield, it looked wonderful to us,&#8221; Wiseman added. &#8220;It looked great.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The ride back down to Earth was really amazing,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It was a very smooth ride.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>            What to read next<\/p>\n<p>Wiseman&#8217;s observations are quite preliminary, of course; NASA will doubtless have a lot more to say about the heat shield and its performance in the coming weeks and months.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-3b4d03dd-26cd-4531-8da2-8ca3c0635236\">And Artemis 2 was the swan song for this particular heat shield design; NASA has said it will change things up on future <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-program.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis<\/a> missions.<\/p>\n<p>The next one up likely won&#8217;t experience conditions as extreme as those Artemis 1 and Artemis 2 dealt with. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 3<\/a> will stay in Earth orbit, testing docking procedures using Orion and one or both of the Artemis program&#8217;s privately developed lunar landers (SpaceX&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Starship<\/a> and Blue Origin&#8217;s Blue Moon).<\/p>\n<p>But Artemis 4 will go far afield, and come back hot: It will use one of those landers to put boots down near the lunar south pole, then bring them home from the moon aboard Orion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Artemis 2&#8217;s return to Earth went a lot more smoothly than some folks had feared.
