{"id":404949,"date":"2026-04-18T10:24:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-18T10:24:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/404949\/"},"modified":"2026-04-18T10:24:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T10:24:08","slug":"metrolink-spending-tops-e360m-before-construction-begins-department-figures-show-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/404949\/","title":{"rendered":"MetroLink spending tops \u20ac360m before construction begins, department figures show \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">More than \u20ac360 million has been spent on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/metrolink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/metrolink\">MetroLink<\/a> rail project, with construction of the 19km line yet to start, new figures from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-transport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-transport\/\">Department of Transport<\/a> show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The latest figures for expenditure on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/dublin\/\">Dublin<\/a>\u2019s planned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/public-transport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/public-transport\/\">underground line<\/a>, which is still awaiting final Government approval, show \u20ac138 million was spent on the project in 2025, up from \u20ac65 million in 2024, with the total \u201clifetime\u201d spend to the end of last year having hit \u20ac360 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The figures, prepared by the department\u2019s metro and light rail investment division in recent weeks, do not include the agreed purchase of homes in Dartmouth Square in Ranelagh, which former MetroLink programme director Se\u00e1n Sweeney said would cost approximately \u20ac30 million.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Metro\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/RUP3F725BNCMXF5FACNCHRTLZY.png\"   width=\"800\" height=\"993\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/transport\/2026\/04\/02\/metrolink-director-to-step-down-from-long-delayed-rail-link-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/transport\/2026\/04\/02\/metrolink-director-to-step-down-from-long-delayed-rail-link-project\/\">Sweeney resigned from the \u20ac550,000-a year job<\/a> at the start of April citing family reasons. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/transport\/2026\/04\/18\/where-next-for-metrolink-as-its-project-director-disembarks\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Where next for MetroLink as its project director disembarks?Opens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">New cost estimates for MetroLink, the first in four years, have been completed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/transport-infrastructure-ireland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/transport-infrastructure-ireland\/\">Transport Infrastructure Ireland<\/a> (TII), and were submitted to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-transport-authority\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/national-transport-authority\">National Transport Authority<\/a> (NTA) at the end of March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The NTA said it is reviewing this updated business case for the project in collaboration with the department. If the Government approves the new costs, TII will be allowed to seek construction tenders for the line, which would run from Swords in north Dublin to Charlemont near Ranelagh in south Dublin, serving Dublin Airport and the city centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThat detailed review is expected to be completed in June, at which stage the Department of Transport and Government will be in a position to make a final determination in relation to this approval point,\u201d the NTA said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/transport\/2026\/04\/17\/luas-cork-new-preferred-route-for-2bn-line-would-split-cork-university-hospital-campus\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Luas Cork: New preferred route for \u20ac2bn line would split Cork University Hospital campusOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The estimated costs of the line were last presented by the transport authorities to government in 2022 for approval to submit a planning application for the line. At that time, \u20ac9.5 billion was calculated as the midpoint of a \u201ccredible\u201d cost range of between \u20ac7.16 billion and \u20ac12.25 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">TII chief executive Lorcan O\u2019Connor said although he was not in a position to disclose the new costs, there was \u201cclearly going to be an increase in costs given the inflation that has taken place over the last years\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, he said there is \u201can extremely strong cost benefit ratio\u201d outlined in the business case and he anticipated a decision from Government before the D\u00e1il summer recess in July that would allow the project to proceed to tender this year. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing that I am aware of that would be casting doubt on those timelines at this stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Although a full breakdown of the expenditure for 2025 is not yet available, it includes staff costs, consultancy payments, engineering investigations, design work and some land acquisition, although not the purchase of  10 Victorian houses at Dartmouth Square that back on to the proposed Charlemont stop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">If the Government approves the updated business this summer, TII will sign contracts for enabling works by the end of this year, which would result in extensive on-street works to move utilities starting next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Tunnelling contracts would be awarded by the end of next year, which would allow construction to start by 2028.
