A man in his 40s has been arrested over an alleged cyber attack that caused disruption at Dublin, Cork, London Heathrow and other European airports in recent days.<\/p>\n

The UK National Crime Agency (NCA) said the suspect was held in West Sussex on Tuesday on suspicion of Computer Misuse Act offences, and released on conditional bail.<\/p>\n

Deputy director Paul Foster, head of the NCA’s National Cyber Crime Unit, said: “Although this arrest is a positive step, the investigation into this incident is in its early stages and remains ongoing.<\/p>\n

“Cybercrime is a persistent global threat that continues to cause significant disruption to the UK.<\/p>\n

“Alongside our partners here and overseas, the NCA is committed to reducing that threat in order to protect the British public.”<\/p>\n

The alleged cyber attack affected Collins Aerospace and saw check-in and boarding systems disrupted at London Heathrow, Brussels and Berlin airports.<\/p>\n

The airport disruptions that affected automated check-in systems were caused by a ransomware attack, the EU\u2019s cyber security agency said yesterday, highlighting the growing risks of such attacks to critical infrastructure and industries.<\/p>\n

Hackers knocked out automated check-in systems provided by Collins Aerospace, owned by RTX, affecting dozens of flights and thousands of passengers since Friday.<\/p>\n

Collins Aerospace said yesterday that it was working with the affected airports and was in the final stages of completing updates to help restore full functionality.<\/p>\n

\u201cAirlines across Heathrow have implemented contingencies whilst their supplier Collins Aerospace works to resolve an issue with their airline check-in systems at airports across the world,\u201d a Heathrow spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
