AN EXHIBITION by Fermanagh artist Rachael Johnson is set to open at the Struel Arts Centre in Omagh next week.<\/p>\n
The solo exhibition, which opens on May 1 at 7pm and runs until May 30, will offer an intimate exploration of memory, healing and the subconscious, bringing together both new work and selected pieces from across Rachael\u2019s career. Admission is free.<\/p>\n
The show takes its name from the psychological phenomenon of seeing patterns or meaning in random or ambiguous images, such as faces in clouds. For Rachael, this concept lies at the heart of her creative process.<\/p>\n
\u201cI never know in advance what I\u2019m going to paint. I apply, rearrange, remove and reapply layers of colour and texture with no direction in mind until a particular curve or colour resonates with something forgotten, hidden or lost,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Working with a wide range of materials, such as\u00a0paint, ink, charcoal, organic matter, paper, metal, wood, stone and glass, Rachael creates textured, mixed-media pieces she describes as interior landscapes shaped by memory and inhabited by shifting forms.<\/p>\n
The exhibition also marks a reflective moment in the life and career of the Enniskillen woman, who is the daughter of artists and former teachers Toni and the late Gordon Johnson.<\/p>\n
Having spent more than two decades working as a registered art psychotherapist, Rachael has long supported people on their journey towards healing through art-making. With Pareidolia, she turns the lens on herself.<\/p>\n
He artistic path has been shaped by extensive travel.<\/p>\n
After leaving Enniskillen in 1980 to study Fine Art, she journeyed across North Africa, South and Central America, India, Australia and Southeast Asia. .<\/p>\n
She later completed a Master\u2019s degree in Art Psychotherapy in Cork and has since built a dual career as both a practising artist and therapist. Archetypal symbols and ritual processes recur throughout her work.<\/p>\n
Now based in Derry, Johnson has exhibited widely, with recent shows in Dublin and Cork.
