April 19 (Reuters) – Alphabet (GOOG<\/a>, GOOGL<\/a>)’s Google is in talks with Marvell Technology (MRVL<\/a>) to \u200cdevelop two new chips aimed at \u200crunning AI models more efficiently, The Information reported<\/a> on \u200bSunday citing two people with knowledge of the discussions.<\/p>\n

One of the chips is a memory processing unit designed to work with \u200cGoogle’s tensor \u2060processing unit (TPU) and the other chip is a new TPU built \u2060specifically for running AI models, the report said.<\/p>\n

Google has been pushing to make its \u200bTPUs a \u200bviable alternative to \u200bNvidia<\/a> (NVDA<\/a>)’s dominant GPUs. \u200cTPU sales have become a key driver of growth in Google’s cloud revenue as it aims to show investors that its AI investments are generating returns.<\/p>\n

Reuters could not \u200cimmediately verify the report. \u200bGoogle and Marvell did \u200bnot immediately \u200brespond to a request for \u200ca comment.<\/p>\n

The companies aim to \u200bfinalize the \u200bdesign of the memory processing unit as soon as next year before \u200bhanding it \u200coff for test production, according to \u200bthe report.<\/p>\n
