{"id":407252,"date":"2026-04-19T21:21:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-19T21:21:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/407252\/"},"modified":"2026-04-19T21:21:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T21:21:09","slug":"tipp-win-doesnt-change-corks-approach-for-limerick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/407252\/","title":{"rendered":"Tipp win doesn&#8217;t change Cork&#8217;s approach for Limerick"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\">When the fixtures for this year\u2019s Munster SHC were announced, it was natural to look at Cork\u2019s opening two games as a pair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Away to Tipperary, with Limerick to come to Cork a week later \u2013 those of a pessimistic bent were catastrophising a situation where the Rebels would be travelling to Waterford on May 9 needing to save their season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Thankfully, Ben O\u2019Connor\u2019s first championship game in charge yielded a victory away to the All-Ireland champions \u2013 but that doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that anything changes in terms of the approach for Limerick\u2019s visit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n             \u201cNo, no change at all,\u201d he said, \u201conly we\u2019ve two points in the bag. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe best team in the country for the last ten years coming to town next weekend, league champions, they&#8217;re on a bit of form. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cSo look, we know we&#8217;ll have to improve a lot from today, but we have a chance of doing that. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n            We&#8217;ll get back to work during the week and we&#8217;ll work on a few more bits and pieces and hopefully next Sunday we&#8217;ll get two points.\u201d\n        <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Cork asserted themselves with an eight-point surge in the third quarter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI suppose we probably upped the workrate a small little bit,\u201d O\u2019Connor said, \u201cand I think there was a slight breeze helping us in the second half, which does make a difference. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe were winning a lot of the individual battles around us and I suppose we were playing on the front foot at that stage, where maybe at times before that, we were maybe striking the ball going backwards, but we were on the front foot at that stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/5046941_4_articleinlinemobile_3432891.jpg\" alt=\"Brian Hayes of Cork is tackled by Willie Connors of Tipperary. Picture: Brendan Moran\/Sportsfile<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n            \u201cWe thought we were actually hurling okay,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cA few sloppy mistakes here and there and we gave away a few points that we shouldn&#8217;t have given away from line balls and things like that, a few frees that we thought were maybe a small bit harsh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cBut look if you go in at half-time in a Munster championship match, you&#8217;re happy enough that you can come out and you&#8217;ve 35 more minutes then after that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">WORTH THE RISK<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Some of the sloppiness came from playing short passes out of defence \u2013 such an approach is vulnerable to that, but O\u2019Connor felt Cork benefited more from it than they lost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n            Yeah, we worked more ball out, we got more scores out of going short than what we conceded from. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cLook, that&#8217;s not to say that we won&#8217;t go long the next day or the day after. It&#8217;s just we&#8217;re playing what&#8217;s in front of us. We&#8217;ve fellas inside in that dressing room down there, they can play, play whatever way it falls in front of them. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cSo, look, we don&#8217;t put any pressure on them fellas, they play it as they see it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/5046944_4_articleinlinemobile_3432893.jpg\" alt=\"Cork manager Ben O'Connor encourages his players. At the same time, O\u2019Connor was not going to get carried away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWhen you&#8217;re winning\u2026if we were after being beaten, there wouldn&#8217;t be anyone looking for a selfie off you, there&#8217;d be no one looking to talk to you at all. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe&#8217;ll take every good day that we have \u2013 again, you see the boys there today after a tough game outside in that heat. They stayed outside, signing autographs for young ones. I just think it&#8217;s a credit to them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cYou never see a young fella walking off that he didn&#8217;t get an autograph when he was looking for one off the lads.
