{"id":407686,"date":"2026-04-20T03:58:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T03:58:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/407686\/"},"modified":"2026-04-20T03:58:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T03:58:11","slug":"more-than-e17m-in-payments-provided-over-past-two-years-to-people-struggling-with-burial-costs-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/407686\/","title":{"rendered":"More than \u20ac17m in payments provided over past two years to people struggling with burial costs \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">More than \u20ac17 million was provided in emergency payments over the past two years to people struggling with the cost of burying loved ones. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The spending was part of more than \u20ac133 million paid out by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-social-protection\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-social-protection\/\">Department of Social Protection<\/a> in additional needs payments in 2024 and 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Additional needs payments are aimed at helping people with expenses they cannot pay from their own income.  Eligibility depends on income and social welfare payments. Income and circumstances are assessed for each applicant. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">About \u20ac71 million in total was paid for the \u201ckit out\u201d of new accommodation for welfare recipients. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">About 4,900 people were granted assistance for burials, totalling \u20ac9.33 million in 2024 and a further \u20ac7.86 million in 2025. The average payment for funeral expenses was around \u20ac3,500, according to data released under Freedom of Information  laws. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A total of \u20ac6.6 million was granted for \u201cadult clothing\u201d in  about 53,000 cases \u2013 roughly \u20ac125 per payment. There was \u20ac526,000-worth of spending on bedding and \u20ac178,000 for children\u2019s clothing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Department of Social Protection also sanctioned \u20ac52,000 in payments for nappies and \u20ac241,000 for the purchase of cots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A further \u20ac215,000 was paid in \u201cconfinement costs\u201d, understood to relate to childbirth, and \u20ac1.295 million for floor coverings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The department allocated \u20ac9.11 million for  furniture in 6,015 applications, or an appliances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A total of \u20ac306,000 was paid in hostel costs for people struggling to find permanent housing, and \u20ac10,500 for bed and breakfast accommodation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">There was \u20ac5.05 million-worth of payments for \u201cinsufficient means\u201d, where a person was struggling to make ends meet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A further \u20ac257,000 in spending was approved for money that was stolen or lost, along with \u20ac900 in payments for mortgage arrears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">About \u20ac740,000 was paid for the purchase of prams and buggies, while  a dozen prisoners newly released from jail received about  \u20ac160 each.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Rent supports of \u20ac2.36 million were granted \u2013 including \u20ac1.37 million for rent arrears, \u20ac940,000 for rent deposits, and \u20ac42,000 for rent in advance.<\/p>\n<p listed by the department were \u20ac2.1 million for repairs and maintenance and \u20ac640,000 in telephone costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">About  \u20ac4.1 million was also granted in \u201curgent needs payments\u201d by the department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">An information note from the department  said: \u201cThe scheme is demand-led, and payments are made at the discretion of the officers administering the scheme, taking into account the requirements of the legislation and all the relevant circumstances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe
