Emmerdale stars Joe-Warren Plant and Caroline Harker have discussed the possibility that Jacob Sugden could quit his job at the hospital amid the storyline in which he has been<\/a> bullied by his boss, Dr Caitlin Todd<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The ITV soap<\/a> has been exploring an issue-led storyline over the past few months, where Jacob has been belittled and manipulated by Dr Todd<\/a>. This has stretched beyond the boundaries of the hospital, as his boss moved into the village.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, her villainy reached new levels as she cruelly mocked elements of Jacob’s traumatic past<\/a>. Recent scenes saw the trainee doctor make a bold step as he reported his boss to HR<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While it remains to be seen if the report will help his cause, Plant, who plays Jacob, discussed the possibility that his character could leave his job if the position becomes untenable in the future.<\/p>\n

“Things are kind of boiling over for him,” admitted the actor. “But this is the career that he wanted and what [mum] Leyla wanted him to do – she was so extremely proud of him. At the moment, that’s the one thing that’s stuck in his mind. <\/p>\n

“He’s like: ‘I can’t give up. This is what I wanted. This is how I prove to myself and everybody around me that I’m actually strong and capable’. Jacob’s a lot of things, but I don’t think he’s a quitter.<\/p>\n

“At this moment, I think he’s just going to ride with it. He always tries to deal with it, even though there isn’t anything wrong in saying: ‘This is enough for me. I can’t do this anymore’. But he gets into worse positions because he’s trying to fight it.”<\/p>\n

While Plant believes that Jacob will be determined to remain in his position, the actor noted that the inconsistency of Dr Todd’s behaviour is what caused the initial struggle, with the doctor providing just enough encouragement to keep Jacob hooked.<\/p>\n

“He’s really suffering, but there are moments of hope,” he said. “In Jacob’s moments of vulnerability, he needs somebody to say: ‘Look, what you’re doing is OK. You’re doing a great job’. Unfortunately, it’s coming from the person who\u2019s making him feel like that.”<\/p>\n

Harker, who plays Dr Todd, added: “But that’s what bullying in the workplace does, doesn’t it? I spoke to someone about it, and it’s about the reeling in. Just when you’re feeling safe again, you’ll be hit by something – that’s a pattern that repeats itself.”<\/p>\n

While the pair are involved in a dramatic storyline, they did reserve praise for the team who work on the hospital set, with Harker lauding their efforts to make it feel like a “real hospital”.<\/p>\n

“The hospital set, there\u2019s something about it. It does almost feel like you\u2019re filming something different to Emmerdale,” added Plant. “The stakes are always higher in that set. That\u2019s what I felt, anyway. It makes for good TV.\u201d<\/p>\n
