Coronation Street producer Kate Brooks has spoken in-depth about the show’s dramatic ‘murder week’<\/a> for the first time \u2013 can you spot any clues to who might be killed off?<\/p>\n

The show airs a special run of episodes next week, exploring five possible victims<\/a> in a big new murder mystery plot.<\/p>\n

One of Carl Webster, Jodie Ramsey, Megan Walsh, Maggie Driscoll and Theo Silverton is about to get their comeuppance in a grisly storyline twist. The unlucky character’s body is found on the day of Carla Connor and Lisa Swain’s wedding<\/a>, sparking a police investigation.<\/p>\n

Next Monday’s episode follows Theo’s movements on the day in question, Tuesday’s focuses on Carl, Wednesday’s episode deals with Jodie’s story, while Thursday’s shines a spotlight on Megan and Maggie. Friday’s edition then brings all the stories together and reveals which character has taken their last breath.<\/p>\n

The plot twist was first revealed in February, when a flashforward scene showed Betsy Swain being interviewed by police after finding the body.<\/p>\n

Speaking about how the complicated storyline came about, Brooks teased: “The original idea for the flashforward came when I was at Euro Disney with the kids! I was getting five minutes of peace and quiet in the shower and was trying to think about how to make a whodunit feel different and fresh.<\/p>\n

“I wanted to keep people interested from the get-go, rather than waiting until we found the murder victim. So I thought, what if we did a ‘who is it?’ What if we did a flashforward and got people hooked into the story before we revealed what the story actually was? I thought there was something in this.”<\/p>\n

She continued: “The idea evolved through story conferences as we storylined and scripted it, but that was the original nugget. The other thing is that we were in a unique position, where we did have five very complex people in varying degrees of villainy.<\/p>\n

“We thought we could make a virtue of the fact that any one of them could be a potential suspect or victim. That was a unique position to be in, so we thought we’d make that the story point and explore that.”<\/p>\n

Show bosses have taken a careful approach to Carla and Lisa’s involvement in the story. Although Lisa’s daughter Betsy makes the discovery on the evening of the wedding reception, Carla and Lisa are both unaware of what’s happened and their day is not spoiled.<\/p>\n

“We wanted a really joyous romance full of hope and love \u2013 it is a beautiful wedding,” Brooks confirmed. “Obviously we are a soap so we need that backdrop of drama and excitement, but I didn’t want to tarnish the wedding either.<\/p>\n

“Carla and Lisa are oblivious \u2013 they’ve got no idea. They’re watching fireworks and Sally shimmying out of her jacket, which is one of my favourite moments by the way! They’re having a great time, so they’re unaware of the drama unfolding on the street.<\/p>\n

“It’s a way of getting the best of both worlds. We’ve got these really exciting stories and a big week \u2013 the wedding element became a nice backdrop to everything.”<\/p>\n

Another key element in the planning was making sure that there were big consequences. Not only will the murder mystery play out in the weeks ahead, but we’ll also see further stories for the four villains who manage to survive.<\/p>\n

“Going forward, there’s so many consequences for each individual character,” Brooks teased. “Then we’ve also got the ‘who did it?’ element \u2013 that big story going forward, as well as unpacking what’s going on with all those other characters. It’s very complex but satisfying and enjoyable as well. <\/p>\n

“For the murder week itself, we deliberately intended to make each episode feel like a mini movie. The hook is that we still don’t know who’s been killed, which enables a bit of levity \u2013 especially in Jodie’s episode, which is really funny.<\/p>\n

“David is really drunk and it’s very laugh-out-loud, side-splittingly funny because Jack [P Shepherd, who plays David] is amazing.<\/p>\n

“Sally and Tim are great too. There are all sorts of shenanigans going on \u2013 and we do dip back into the wedding a little bit. That gave us a chance to follow different themes and inject levity and humour.<\/p>\n

“There are great writers on all the episodes, who gave it that real Corrie feel, while it still felt big and bold and different to what we’ve done before. There’s a great soundtrack too \u2013 the opening of every episode is a banger!”<\/p>\n

Coronation Street airs on weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX<\/a>.<\/p>\n
