Speaking in French to students at the Catholic University of Central Africa in Yaound\u00e9, Cameroon, the Chicago-born pontiff warned that rapidly advancing AI technologies risk hollowing out real human relationships.<\/p>\n

Docuseries shines light on dangers of AI <\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWithin digital environments \u2014 structured to persuade \u2014 interaction is optimized to the point of rendering a real encounter superfluous; the otherness of persons in the flesh is neutralized, and relationships are reduced to functional responses,\u201d the 70-year-old pope said. \u201cDear friends, you, however, are real persons!\u201d<\/p>\n

AI, truth and \u2018simulated reality\u2019<\/p>\n

As artificial intelligence reshapes global society, Pope Leo emphasized that technical skill alone is not enough.<\/p>\n

What is needed, he said, is deeper human formation \u2014 education that helps young people understand not just how technology works but what it means.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen simulation becomes the norm, it weakens the human capacity for discernment,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n

The consequences, he said, are already visible: echo chambers that isolate people; blurring the line between truth and fiction; and growing polarization, distrust, fear and violence.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a result, our social bonds close in upon themselves,\u201d he said. \u201cWe thus come to live within bubbles, impermeable to one another.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ultimately, the risk is far more dangerous.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is at stake is not merely the risk of error, but a transformation in our very relationship with truth,\u201d Pope Leo said.<\/p>\n

A call to lead with ethics and humanity<\/p>\n

The pope urged universities across Africa to go beyond technical training and form leaders grounded in ethics, responsibility and service.<\/p>\n

Faced with surge of AI data centers, rural towns speak out <\/a><\/p>\n

Students, he said, must become critical thinkers, capable of discernment; leaders guided by integrity; and citizens committed to the common good.<\/p>\n

Pope Leo\u2019s solution to the AI age is simple but demanding: shape \u201cminds capable of discernment and hearts ready for love and service.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to his warning about AI, Pope Leo delivered a second message aimed directly at African youth: resist the urge to leave.<\/p>\n
