In the last five years alone, he’s released albums with Evidence, August Fanon, Real Bad Man, Nottz, legendary L.A. rappers Fatlip and Myka9, and his primary collaborator, the producer Exile. As such, it’s tempting to look at his career as “all wins, no losses.” But anyone who’s been following Blu since his stunning 2007 breakthrough with Exile, Below the Heavens, knows that’s hardly the case. Instead, his staying power came the hard way: Through determination. Since the release of Heavens, he suffered major label heartbreaks, robberies, mental breakdowns, incarceration, and tragic loss. If it weren’t for his determination, we might not be speaking to him right now.

“Things I’m interested in, I always go full force,” Blu says. That fierce devotion has its downsides: “Full force” ended his high school hoop dreams when he shattered his ankle dunking four straight possessions in a scrimmage. He decided, then and there, that his future was in rap music. A child of divorce, Blu moved frequently, and by high school, he was living in San Pedro, where he put together a rap crew with locals Donel Smokes and Definite Mass. An Inland Empire producer named Bombay furnished them with DJ Quik-ish beats. Blu also had his eye on a singer two grades below him named Miguel, who already showed promise. And so it was a confident Blu who showed up at the front door of Basic at 7:30 in the morning, ready to impress the manager and Wake Up Show employee with his skills. “He opened the door in a robe with a coffee mug, like, ‘What the fuck,’” Blu says. But the audacity paid off: Basic agreed to represent Blu’s group with Miguel, Rhythm & Blu, circulating their demos, and attracting major label interest from Interscope and Roc-A-Fella.

When Miguel recorded in Cincinnati with Hi-Tek, Talib Kweli’s producer partner in Reflection Eternal, Hi-Tek wanted to replace all of Blu’s vocals with Mos Def. Blu remembers Miguel calling to apologize for the bad news. “He said, ‘Yo, I’m in Cincinnati with Tek, he said he gon’ replace you with Mos Def. My bad,’” Blu recalls. “I was like, ‘What? That’s bananas!’ [Even though that happened] I was amped, because I felt like no matter what I’d be next.”

Ultimately, the Hi-Tek deal dissolved, but soon Blu and Miguel were in New York City being courted by Grammy Award-winning producer Megahertz. When his Escalade picked them up at the airport, Blu remembers hearing Kay Slay on Hot 97 debuting the new Busta Rhymes single “We Gon Do It To Ya”—produced by Megahertz. Kay Slay played the song eight times in a row. “I was like ‘We about to blow up, bro,’” Blu says. “I knew right there it was on.”

Except it wasn’t. At the height of his fame, Megahertz left music to deal with family issues and never returned. And so Blu and Miguel found themselves right back at the start. Blu was unfazed by the setbacks—after all, he was only 19. He’d rap for anyone who would listen in order to get a deal—including Suge Knight.

Blu’s Death Row story has all of the infamy and danger associated with Knight and Death Row. Blu was told to freestyle in a cafeteria, where over a dozen Bloods were hanging out. He knew the unspoken part: He might catch a beatdown if the room was unimpressed. He kicked 50 bars, then 60 bars, then 100 bars consecutively. Pleased, Knight asked Blu what he wanted. Blu said “a house and car,” and Knight approved the price tag. Hyped about the offer, Blu went to RBX, an ex-Death Row artist and mentor, with the good news—and RBX promptly talked the young rapper out of signing with Death Row. “They gon’ take all your money,” Blu recalls him saying. So instead, Blu appeared twice on RBX’s 2003 album Ripp Tha Game Bloody.

Twenty-two years later, Blu would recount the Death Row experience in full on “Suge Knight,” a song that ends with: “Before that plan fleshed out/ I met Exile/ After that I put my best out.”

His best was Below the Heavens, the album that caught the attention of early ‘00s underground rap fans and marked Blu as a particularly gifted MC with a promising future. The seeds of the album were planted when Blu met Exile via mutual friend Aloe Blacc (Exile and Blacc were in the group Emanon together.) “I specifically remember sitting in my car with Blu, and we just started planning our album,” Exile says. “I think I said, ‘I wanna do Reflection Eternal, but for the West.’ He was like ‘Word, yeah!’” In the end, Below The Heavens wasn’t a one-for-one West Coast version of Reflection Eternal, but remnants of the original concept surface across the album: Two Los Angelenos channeling Midwest and East Coast aesthetics through vintage soul horns and DJ Premier-esque scratching, while Blu’s flows are heavily influenced by Common and CL Smooth. As Blu puts it, “I just took a huge turn from trying to be commercially successful to making something that I would listen to.” By the time they were working on the album’s final sequencing, Exile says, they realized they had a classic on their hands. On tour with Aloe Blacc and Ta’Raach, the pair performed songs from their then-unreleased record. To Exile’s surprise, somehow, the crowd was already rapping along. “We’re like, what the fuck?,” he remembers, “Then, it happened in more than one city. That’s such a unique way to find out your shit is hitting.”

It was also a unique way to find out your shit had been leaked to the Okayplayer message board. The duo’s label was in the midst of internal power struggles and Exile suspects one of the owners of Sound In Color leaked the album to sabotage his rival partner. The leak even made it to Kanye West who praised “Blue Collar Worker” on his blog. If it was sabotage, it backfired.

What ultimately sabotaged Below The Heavens were the label’s financial problems. They only pressed 3,500 CDs, no vinyl, and declared bankruptcy shortly after. But Blu was too busy looking forward to be too stressed about the setback. In 2009, the news broke that Blu had signed a deal with Warner Brothers: Three albums, three short films, and control of his own imprint. That same year he’d appear on XXL’s storied Freshman Class cover alongside Kid Cudi, Curren$y, Cory Gunz, and Wale. Rather than deliver another Blu & Exile record, Blu envisioned his major label debut as a way to introduce the next sound of L.A. NoYork! would rely on the experimental beat scene that was taking shape at Daddy Kev’s Low End Theory parties, where artists like Samiyam, Gaslamp Killer, Nosaj Thing, DJ Nobody, and Flying Lotus were building a movement.

But Warner Bros couldn’t save Blu from the major label free-fall that accompanied the rise of P2P music piracy in the ‘10s. The timing could not have been worse for a new artist like Blu. Each round of layoffs, firings, and organizational restructuring stalled the release of NoYork! for another six months. The writing was on the wall when Blu was denied entry at the front desk Warner Bros offices. “They told me that they didn’t know who I was,” he recalls. At the advice of his former A&Rs, Blu began trying to find a new home for his album. “It’s waves,” he says, reflecting on the setbacks. “Something happens, and another door opens. You think this [opportunity] is gonna be the one. You hope every time.”

Stuck in major-label limbo, Blu licked his wounds by retreating into warm, evocative home recordings, rapping over his own production and beats he’d collected from Knxledge, The Alchemist, and Madlib. Prior to Below The Heavens, Exile recalls, Blu abstained from weed, claiming he’d burn one when he finally got a deal. By 2011, he was permanently stoned, which shifted his output and writing style. Inspired by seeing the Egyptian Revolution on the news, he decided that his own rebellion was necessary. If his music was being imprisoned by the industry, he demanded freedom. He shortened his name to B and recorded his first lo-fi album j e s u s in two days. He can be heard shouting “Egypt ‘11, bitch” at the end of “Lucky.” He inked a deal with Nature Sounds to re-release Her Favorite Colo(u)r and TheGODleeBarnes(LP), projects that he’d originally posted to MySpace.

Blu asked Exile for electronic beats that would fit his York concept, believing in his production partner’s mutability (“He’s amazing with the electronic beats, but he doesn’t put that material out,” Blu says). Instead, he received back psychedelic acoustic-guitar loops, knotty Rhodes pianos, jazzy flute grooves, and a trippy rework of the “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” theme. “I was like, ‘Well, this isn’t what I was looking for.’ But I had a bunch of raps that I wrote around the time of Her Favorite Colo(u)r that I never used.” He spent two weeks restructuring those rhymes to fit Exile’s prismatic loops. Instead of allowing Exile to refine the tracks, he intentionally leaked a shoddily mixed version on Bandcamp as Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them. In his mind, “We weren’t gonna do anything with the songs. Let me just get this to the people.” (A year later, Fat Beats re-released a properly mixed version.)

Exile claims Give Me My Flowers… is something Warner Brothers would have happily released—the label was always more interested in the “Blu & Exile sound” than what we was attempting on York. But Blu was insistent that York was the future. And so while on Rock The Bells Tour, Blu leaked NoYork!—now titled York—as a mixtape. Warner Bros finally had enough and officially terminated his contract. “Me releasing everything that I had in the vaults,” he says, “that was the start of my independence.”

In 2014, Blu moved back to San Pedro to be closer to his grandparents and started reconnecting with high school friends, one of whom was the producer Bombay. If the meandering year of lo-fi leaks had muddied Blu’s reputation, working with Bombay was the perfect way to restore it. If L.A. wasn’t yet counting Blu as one of their own, he’d rewrite the narrative by surrounding himself with the L.A. underground’s dopest rappers—Evidence, Phil The Agony, Pac Div, LMNO, 2Mex, and his favorite, Planet Asia. He even got Definite Mass and Donel Smokes from his San Pedro rap crew on the record. The album, 2014’s Good To Be Home, got a positive reception. But, as had become the pattern with Blu, adversity was waiting just around the corner.

In April of 2015, Blu found out he was going to be a father again. He had a daughter in 2011; now, a son with his new partner was on the way. Blu packed up his record collection and home studio equipment to start a new chapter in a new apartment. While on the journey, he decided to stay overnight in a hotel, and as he slept, his U-haul was robbed. The thieves made off with his recording equipment, his record collection, and his personal song archive. In the aftermath, Blu became tormented. Paranoia consumed him. “I thought the homies set me up,” he says. “I thought the police set me up. I was really off my rocker. I didn’t have a clear vision of any truth. I turned my back on a lot of people, thinking that a lot of people turned their back on me.” Exile’s diagnosis was cannabis-induced psychosis. “I’ve heard that it’s possible to hit psychosis from smoking too much weed, and this guy was smoking a lot,” he says. “He was trying to calm his nervous system through smoking, and it was backfiring.”

Blu should have been celebrating the victory of Bad Neighbor, his new Madlib-produced full-length, which boasted high-profile features from guests like MF DOOM, Mayer Hawthorne, and Anderson .Paak. But his mind kept slipping. When his partner lost the baby, his paranoia turned to anger. In December of that year, Blu was arrested for getting into a fistfight with someone he perceived as a threat. He served six months, and his psychiatrist diagnosed his mental breakdown as a psychotic episode. Exile says when Blu got out—now cleaned up by six months of forced sobriety—he was a changed man. “I think not having weed in his system helped,” Exile says. “He wasn’t on medication. It was the old Blu, but different. His artistic capabilities and energy was like a shining star. It was just radiating. To be around him at that time, you can feel this great energy. We were able to use that energy to create Miles.”

While writing for the album, Blu revisited an old verse called “When The Gods Meet,” his interpretation of the Book of Genesis. He realized it would work as an introduction to the story he would weave across the record. Exile encouraged Blu not to hide from his troubles, but put them to song. The result was “The Feeling,” in which Blu addressed the robbery, the writing struggles he was experiencing after getting out of prison (“Uh, the feeling is gone, couldn’t even pen a good song”), and his anxiety about being too poor to feed his daughter. In the end, Miles: From An Interlude Called Life served multiple purposes. It was, most obviously, a dedication to Miles Davis; it was also the duo’s conscious attempt to position Blu within the soul music continuum. And its title was also the name Blu had chosen for his unborn son. In the end, completing the album had repaired him. “You could make a hot song, and it could still not be you,” he says. “Once the full album was complete, I knew that I could do this again.”

The reborn Blu has lost himself in the joy of making music. After Miles dropped in 2020, he released Afrika with producer Nottz, Bad News with the production team Real Bad Man, and Live From The End of the World with Fatlip—the Pharcyde rapper’s first album since 2005. With each new record, Blu was collecting verses from legendary California rappers. His records became a who’s who of L.A. hip-hop, a place where Kurupt, KXNG Crooked, MC Eiht, Ras Kass, Self Jupiter, Myka 9, and the squeaky clean Pigeon John all coexist.

Each record gave Blu new ways to reflect on his life. His work with Evidence on 2024’s Los Angeles gave him the chance to explore his manic period alongside the producer who’d stuck with him after his breakdown. In 2022, Blu’s son Red was born; the proud father sits on a park bench alongside his son on the cover art of the August Fanon collab Forty.

And now comes Time Heals Everything, the album that the last 20 years feel like they’ve been building toward. Because Blu is always working on a hundred albums at once, he asked Exile to quarterback Time. The producer selected the beats and suggested the conceptual direction.
