Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers will launch the report alongside Harris (Brian Lawless\/PA)<\/p>\nThere is a risk of stagflation in the Irish economy, the T\u00e1naiste has warned.<\/p>\n
Simon Harris is due to publish the Annual Progress Report on Tuesday, which will include a range of forecasts on different scenarios based on potential impacts of the war in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
Harris said the country\u2019s growth forecast would actually have been upgraded if Iran had not been bombed.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThat does speak to the resilience of the Irish economy where growth is strong, there are more people in work than ever before,\u201d he said, arriving at Government Buildings ahead of Cabinet on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve got to move beyond the lazy politics of suggesting that surplus is a dirty word or a derogatory term. Thank God we have a surplus in this country.\u201d<\/p>\n
Harris said there is a risk that inflation will rise to a level where the benefit of economic growth is not felt.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of risks at the moment and I suppose we\u2019re trying to forecast and we\u2019re trying to plan while grappling with external factors largely outside the control of this country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harris said Ireland is facing into the next period from a position of \u201creal relative strength\u201d and \u201cfiscal resilience\u201d, demonstrated by economic growth and high employment.<\/p>\n
The Finance Minister said Ireland and Europe is \u201csomewhat at the mercy\u201d of decisions \u201ctaken by other people far away\u201d, as he advocated for more sustainable energy use.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cAs we plan for the future, as we plan for the Budget, as we plan as a country, we\u2019ve got to move the conversation beyond just what we do in the here and now around the energy crisis to how we move away from a reliance on fossil fuels.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo break that link, we have to make sure that we don\u2019t just talk about how we help people in the here and now, but we also talk about how we help people with their energy bills in a more sustainable fashion.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow we help people get solar on the roof, how we help people replace windows and doors, make their own home warmer, make their own home cheaper to heat.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHow also, through the Critical Infrastructure Bill, we accelerate the delivery of renewables.\u201d<\/p>\n
