\n\tMichael Jackson<\/a>\u2018s story is headed for the big screen on April 24 with a glaring omission: Janet Jackson<\/a> is nowhere to be seen in the movie.<\/p>\n

\n\tMichael, a biopic sanctioned by the late pop star\u2019s estate, gives a sanitized version of his life, from his childhood as a child star in Gary, Indiana, with the Jackson 5, to his rise as the biggest artist in the world. The story ends in 1988, so the darker aspects of his life<\/a> aren\u2019t tackled, and the crucial family member isn\u2019t seen or mentioned in the film.<\/p>\n

\n\tVariety first revealed<\/a> the shocking news on April 7, but they didn\u2019t give a reason why. Any fan who knows the dynamics of the Jackson family understands that it\u2019s complicated<\/a>, especially since Janet and Michael were tight as siblings. The Root spoke<\/a> to a film representative who shared that \u201cJanet declined to participate in the film.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 2012, the \u201cRhythm Nation\u201d singer, along with her brothers, Jermaine, Randy, Tito, and sister Rebbie, alleged that the estate, run by John Branca, John McClain, and estate lawyer Howard Weitzman, was abusive toward their mother, Katherine, and that Michael\u2019s final will was fraudulent. While Branca and McClain were hoping to turn the bankrupt estate around, Michael\u2019s siblings accused them<\/a> of a \u201cheartless pursuit of wealth, fame, and power\u201d after their brother\u2019s passing.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile Janet has largely stayed away from Michael\u2019s estate in subsequent years, his daughter, Paris, 27, has voiced her concerns<\/a> about Branca and McClain\u2019s reported financial mismanagement.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cParis is increasingly concerned the Estate has become the vehicle for John Branca to enrich and aggrandize himself, rather than serve the beneficiaries\u2019 best interests and steadfastly preserve her father\u2019s legacy,\u201d a November 2025 filing reads, per People.<\/a><\/p>\n

\n\tWhat makes Paris\u2019 lawsuit notable is the fact that she is close with her aunt<\/a>, and both of them have distanced themselves from the film. Paris even took to her Instagram Story in September 2025 to scold actor Colman Domingo for praising her involvement in the film.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cDon\u2019t be telling people I was \u2018helpful\u2019 on the set of a movie I had zero percent involvement in lol. That is so weird,\u201d she wrote, per The Root. \u201cI read one of the first drafts of the script and gave my notes about what was dishonest\/didn\u2019t sit right with me, and when they didn\u2019t address it, I moved on with my life. Not my monkeys, not my circus. God bless and godspeed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhat makes Janet\u2019s absence and Paris\u2019 disdain for the movie more complicated is the fact that Jermaine\u2019s son, Jafaar, convincingly plays the role of his late uncle. According to Page Six<\/a>, she saw the film at a private screening with her family, but \u201chad something negative about almost every scene.\u201d Still, Entertainment Tonight reported<\/a> that Janet \u201cpraised her nephew\u2019s performance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMichael will likely do strong numbers at the box office, but any Jackson family fan will know that it\u2019s not a complete film of the singer\u2019s life,\u00a0especially without Janet represented on the screen.<\/p>\n
