The Dangote Group says it has achieved its first oil from
\nits upstream assets and is preparing to begin marketable crude production in
\nthe coming weeks.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Platts, part of S&P Global Energy,
\nDevakumar Edwin, the vice-president of the Dangote Group, said early testing
\nhas commenced on crude from its Niger Delta licences.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

According to Edwin, the company has already begun standard
\nwell testing and is preparing to scale up output.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have opened a well and begun standard testing, which
\nshould be completed in the next three to four weeks maximum,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter that point, oil can start to be pumped in larger
\nvolumes, and the company can begin work on drilling new wells.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Also speaking, David Bird, the chief executive officer (CEO)
\nof the Dangote refinery, said the upstream assets could provide a more stable
\ncrude supply for the refinery.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cAlongside its upstream interests, the company is seeking to
\nestablish its own shipping presence to help reduce logistics costs and improve
\nthe reliability of its crude sourcing,\u201d Bird said.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cCombined with WAEP\u2019s indigenous production, Dangote-owned
\nvessels could offer the refinery a fully integrated and attractive source of
\nstable crude supply.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

He said the refinery will take delivery of the crude \u201cif it
\nmakes sense\u201d, noting that the company\u2019s joint venture partners will be eager to
\nrealise maximum value for the barrels produced.<\/p>\n

\u201cDangote has interests in upstream, we will continue to grow
\nthat, but that doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that it won\u2019t be arms length at every
\nphase,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Dangote refinery and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum
\nRegulatory Commission (NUPRC) did not respond to enquiries on the development
\nas of the time of filing this report.<\/p>\n

Crude oil production could help close supply gaps, a major
\nchallenge that threatened the refinery\u2019s operations when it came on stream.<\/p>\n

On April 1, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC)
\nLimited said it would allocate seven cargoes in May to Dangote refinery, an
\nincrease from the five allocated in previous months.<\/p>\n
