{"id":410709,"date":"2026-04-21T22:05:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T22:05:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/410709\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T22:05:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T22:05:07","slug":"more-money-but-more-pressure-on-the-government-to-spend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/410709\/","title":{"rendered":"More money but more pressure on the Government to spend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Journalists had gathered at the Department of Finance today expecting a &#8216;doom and gloom&#8217; Spring Economic Forecast that warned of the geopolitical threats to growth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/business\/2026\/0421\/1569257-spring-economic-forecast\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">But the headline figure from the briefing proved to be the opposite of gloom, with the data revealing a projected general government surplus this year of \u20ac9.2bn<\/a>, up from the \u20ac5.1bn surplus that was forecast on Budget Day last year.<\/p>\n<p>There were some warnings, particularly with regards to the Iran conflict.<\/p>\n<p>However even in the &#8220;severe&#8221; scenario of oil hitting $150 a barrel, the economy would continue to grow, albeit at a slower pace.<\/p>\n<p>So where did the extra \u20ac4bn of a projected surplus come from?<\/p>\n<p>There is of course our old friend corporation tax which is continuing to perform better than expected.<\/p>\n<p>The impact of US President Donald Trump&#8217;s tariffs was not as severe as first feared.<\/p>\n<p>There was in increased investment in data centres linked to the boom in artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>There is more revenue in the social insurance fund and there has been less spending by bodies outside of central government departments such as local authorities.<\/p>\n<p>It all means a bigger surplus which means bigger pressures on the Government to spend.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"L-R Public Expenditure Minister Jack Chambers and Finance Minister Simon Harris speaking to the media at the department of Finance in Dublin about the Spring Economic Statement.
