{"id":410923,"date":"2026-04-22T01:02:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T01:02:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/410923\/"},"modified":"2026-04-22T01:02:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T01:02:10","slug":"midlife-behavior-predicts-how-long-animals-are-likely-to-live","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/410923\/","title":{"rendered":"Midlife behavior predicts how long animals are likely to live"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you watched a bunch of animals living in identical conditions, you\u2019d expect them to age in roughly similar ways.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But in a new study from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanford.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Stanford<\/a>, short-lived fish with similar genetics still aged very differently \u2013 and the weird part is that the differences showed up early. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/earthsnap.onelink.me\/3u5Q\/ags2loc4\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">&#13;<br \/>\n    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"fit-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/earthsnap-banner-news.webp.webp\" alt=\"EarthSnap\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>By \u201cmidlife,\u201d the way a fish swam and slept could already signal whether it was headed for a long life or a short one.<\/p>\n<p>The study was led by postdoctoral scholars Claire Bedbrook and Ravi Nath, and grew out of a collaboration between the labs of geneticist Anne Brunet and bioengineer Karl Deisseroth.<\/p>\n<p>The big idea is simple but kind of mind-bending: behavior might be one of the earliest, most sensitive readouts of how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/extreme-heat-found-to-accelerate-aging-at-cellular-level-study-reports\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">aging<\/a> is unfolding \u2013 not just in fish, but also in all vertebrate animals.<\/p>\n<p>Watching aging the hard way<\/p>\n<p>Most aging studies compare groups of young animals with groups of old animals. That\u2019s useful, but it\u2019s also like comparing childhood photos to retirement photos and trying to guess what happened in between.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You miss the personal timeline \u2013 the twists, the plateaus, and the moments when things suddenly change.<\/p>\n<p>Bedbrook and Nath wanted to do something more interesting: follow the same individuals continuously, day and night, across their whole adult lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To pull that off, they used the African turquoise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/secrets-of-killifish-regeneration-may-help-us-heal-humans\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">killifish<\/a> \u2013 a lab favorite for aging studies because it lives only about four to eight months, but still has many biological features shared with longer-lived vertebrates, including humans.<\/p>\n<p>Capturing the daily routines of fish<\/p>\n<p>The researchers built an automated setup where each fish lived in its own tank under constant camera surveillance. In total, they tracked 81 individuals and collected billions of video frames.<\/p>\n<p>From all that footage, the team extracted detailed measures of posture, speed, movement, and rest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Behavior was broken down into 100 distinct \u201cbehavioral syllables\u201d \u2013 small, repeatable actions that make up the fish\u2019s daily routine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBehavior is a wonderfully integrated readout, reflecting what\u2019s happening across the brain and body,\u201d Brunet said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMolecular markers are essential, but they capture only slices of biology. With behavior, you see the whole organism, continuously and non-invasively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fish diverged early, not late<\/p>\n<p>After the fish lived out their full lives, the researchers grouped them by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/genetics-heredity-play-much-larger-role-in-lifespan-than-previously-thought\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lifespan<\/a> \u2013 who lived longer, who died earlier \u2013 and then basically rewound the tape to see when the differences began.<\/p>\n<p>They found the separation started surprisingly early: by about 70 to 100 days of age, which is early midlife for a killifish, the \u201cshort-life\u201d and \u201clong-life\u201d fish were already behaving differently.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/scientists-may-have-just-solved-the-mystery-of-sleep\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sleep<\/a> was one of the clearest signals. Fish that died sooner tended to sleep not only at night, but more and more during the day. Fish that lived longer mostly slept at night, keeping a more normal day-night rhythm.<\/p>\n<p>Movement also mattered. The longer-lived fish tended to swim with more vigor. When they darted around the tank, they hit higher speeds. They were also generally more active during daylight hours.<\/p>\n<p>And the really striking part: these weren\u2019t just patterns you could notice after the fact. The team used machine-learning models and found that just a few days of behavioral data from a middle-aged fish could predict its eventual lifespan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBehavioral changes pretty early on in life are telling us about future health and future lifespan,\u201d Bedbrook noted.<\/p>\n<p>Aging wasn\u2019t a smooth slide\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another surprise was the shape of aging. The researchers expected slow, gradual decline. Instead, most fish went through two to six rapid behavioral transitions \u2013 each lasting only a few days \u2013 followed by longer stable stages that lasted weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The fish didn\u2019t bounce back and forth randomly between these stages. They mostly moved forward in sequence, like passing through chapters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expected aging to be a slow, gradual process. Instead, animals stay stable for long periods and then transition very quickly into a new stage,\u201d Bedbrook said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeeing this staged architecture appear from continuous behavior alone was one of the most exciting discoveries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team likens the pattern to a Jenga tower. You can pull out a lot of blocks with little obvious change \u2013 until one removal forces a sudden reshuffling.<\/p>\n<p>This \u201cstepwise\u201d aging idea also lines up with some human research suggesting aging markers change in waves, especially in midlife and older age. The killifish study adds a behavioral version of that story.<\/p>\n<p>The biology behind it<\/p>\n<p>The researchers didn\u2019t stop at behavior. At a point in adulthood when behavior could reliably predict lifespan, they looked at gene activity across eight organs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead of obsessing over single genes, they looked for coordinated shifts across groups of genes involved in shared processes.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest differences showed up in the liver. Fish on shorter aging paths had higher activity in genes related to protein production and cellular maintenance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not a full explanation, but it\u2019s a molecular hint that the internal biology is shifting alongside the behavioral changes.<\/p>\n<p>Why this could matter for people<\/p>\n<p>This is a fish study, so nobody\u2019s saying your smartwatch can predict how long you\u2019ll live tomorrow. But the idea has obvious human echoes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We already track movement and sleep constantly through phones and wearables. If subtle changes in activity patterns signal early health shifts \u2013 long before disease is obvious \u2013 that could be a powerful tool for prevention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBehavior turns out to be an incredibly sensitive readout of aging,\u201d Nath said. \u201cYou can look at two animals of the same chronological age and see from their behavior alone that they\u2019re aging very differently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sleep, in particular, is a big focus for the team moving forward.
