Her sketch would be described as stunning if done by an adult artist. \u201cHe said it looks like he had been given a facelift,\u201d she said bashfully when nudged by her mum. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Last year Maya, a pupil of St Anne\u2019s National School in Shankill, Co Dublin, won a special merit award. This year she was on to better things with second prize in her category for nine to 11-year-olds. She also wins a cheque for \u20ac200. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The annual awards are designed to encourage an early interest in art. Previous participants included Robert Ballagh, Bernadette Madden, Dorothy Cross, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/graham-knuttel\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/graham-knuttel\">Graham Knuttel<\/a>, fashion designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/paul-costelloe\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/paul-costelloe\">Paul Costelloe<\/a> and former broadcaster Thelma Mansfield. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Five-year-old Harry Casey from Dundalk, Co Louth, with his piece called Stacey. Photograph: Nick Bradshaw <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Happily named as overall winner at a reception in the Herbert Park Hotel, Ballsbridge, was Aurianna Hanlon, a 16-year-old student at Loreto Secondary School, Granges Road, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kilkenny\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kilkenny\">Co Kilkenny<\/a>. Aurianna also won first prize in the senior 16 to 18 years age category.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Her work, for which she received a prize of \u20ac1,500, was entitled Falling Up \u2013 a striking self-portrait using light and shade. \u201cIt took me about a week, first drawing and then using acrylic paint,\u201d she told The Irish Times. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Final adjudicator and chairwoman of the judging panel, Pauline O\u2019Connell, described Aurianna\u2019s work as \u201can ambitious and compelling self-portrait that challenges perspective and draws the viewer into a shared space, demonstrating both technical control and emotional depth\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe division of light and shadow across the face is masterfully handled, with tonal shifts ranging from warm umbers to cool purples and blues,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Maya Brennan Lawless (9) was named a winner for her pencil portrait of her grandfather. Photograph: Nick Bradshaw <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The middle child of three, Aurianna said she based the painting on a phone selfie. Now in transition year, Aurianna said art would be her \u201ctop choice\u201d subject for her Leaving Certificate and she said she would \u201clove to go to art college.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Also winning an award was Abdul Ahad Zulfiqar (15), from St Mary\u2019s CBS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/portlaoise\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/portlaoise\">Portlaoise<\/a>, who took a special merit in 2017. Photograph: Nick Bradshaw <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Best friends Elizabeth Prunty (9) and Lilly Brennan (8), pupils in the same class at Ratoath National School, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/meath\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/meath\">Co Meath<\/a>, won prizes in the same category. The girls said they attended classes at Clarke Art in Ratoath \u2013 where five winners in this year\u2019s competition had gone. Lilly won second prize while Elizabeth won third in their category. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Blake O\u2019Brien (13), from Croom, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/limerick\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/limerick\">Co Limerick<\/a>, said he was \u201cvery pleased\u201d to have won third prize in his category, which comes with a cheque for \u20ac200.
