{"id":411740,"date":"2026-04-22T12:42:21","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T12:42:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/411740\/"},"modified":"2026-04-22T12:42:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T12:42:21","slug":"photographers-in-kildare-invited-to-enter-irelands-leading-astrophotography-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/411740\/","title":{"rendered":"Photographers in Kildare invited to enter Ireland\u2019s leading astrophotography competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Entries are now open for photographers in Kildare to enter Ireland\u2019s leading astrophotography competition,\u00a0&#8216;Reach for the Stars&#8217;,\u00a0as it returns for a sixth year.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Reach for the Stars\u00a0Astrophotography Competition is celebrating its sixth anniversary, inviting people in\u00a0Kildare\u00a0to pause, look up, and capture the moments that remind us how extraordinary our night sky truly is.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since the beginning of the competition five years ago, photographers from\u00a0Kildare\u00a0have consistently featured among the winning, shortlisted and commended entries in Reach for the Stars, reflecting the strength of the talent across the county.<\/p>\n<p>Organised this year by the School of Cosmic Physics at the\u00a0Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS), Reach for the Stars aims to find the best astro-photographs\u00a0taken in Ireland\u00a0between June 3 2025 and May 10 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Shortlisted entrants will be announced in late June, with the public invited to vote for their favourite to win the \u201cPeople\u2019s Choice\u201d category at that time.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs can be entered in three categories:<\/p>\n<p>Night Sky in Your Hand\u00a0\u2013 Images taken with a smartphone only, without telescopes, capturing an astronomical scene.<\/p>\n<p>Out of this World\u00a0\u2013 Images of astronomical objects, including the Sun, Moon, planets, and deep-sky objects such as nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies.<\/p>\n<p>Back on Earth\u00a0\u2013 Images that depict astronomical features alongside landscapes, landmarks, nature, buildings, or heritage sites.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, one overall\u00a0Public Choice\u00a0winner will be selected by public vote from across the shortlisted entries in all categories.<\/p>\n<p>Entries will be judged by Dan Dennison, Visual Editor, The Irish Times; Dr. Donnacha O\u2019Driscoll, President of the Irish Astronomical Society; Professor Peter Gallagher, Senior Professor and Head of Astronomy and Astrophysics at DIAS; and Dr Niamh Shaw, Scientist, Engineer, and one of Ireland\u2019s leading Science Communicators.<\/p>\n<p>Launching the competition,\u00a0Dr. Eucharia Meehan,\u00a0CEO and Registrar of DIAS, said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReach for the Stars is designed to make astrophotography more accessible for everyone with an interest, supporting science communication and outreach, building awareness of dark skies, and encouraging citizen science. We\u2019re looking forward, as ever, to seeing the range of perspectives and skills that these astrophotographers will bring to the night sky.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chair of the judging panel and Director of DIAS Dunsink Observatory, Professor Peter Gallagher, said: \u201cThe standard of entries to Reach for the Stars generally reflects huge creativity and technical capability. Entries are assessed against clear criteria \u2013 technical skill, artistic flair, astronomical understanding, and originality \u2013 and it\u2019s always evident how much effort sits behind each frame, delivering images that show how extraordinary out universe really is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Competition Details<\/p>\n<p>Entrants may submit\u00a0up to two images per category\u00a0to the competition. The deadline for entries is\u00a05pm, May 11 2026.<\/p>\n<p>All entries will be screened by a shortlisting panel to ensure they meet the eligibility criteria. The shortlisted images in each category will then go forward for consideration by the judging panel and for\u00a0an online public vote\u00a0on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reachforthestars.ie\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">www.reachforthestars.ie<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Prize Package<\/p>\n<p>The winning photographers in the \u2018Out of this World\u2019 and \u2018Back on Earth\u2019 categories, as selected by the judging panel, will receive a prize package that includes:<\/p>\n<p>Publication of their images on the DIAS and The Irish Times websites;<\/p>\n<p>Passes to the three sites of the Astronomical Observatories of Ireland \u2013 DIAS Dunsink Observatory, Armagh Observatory and Planetarium, and Birr Castle Demesne;<\/p>\n<p>A \u20ac500 voucher for photographic equipment; and<\/p>\n<p>A digital subscription to The Irish Times.<\/p>\n<p>The winner of the Public Choice category, as voted for by the public, and the winner of the \u2018Night Sky in Your Hand\u2019 category will each receive a voucher to the value of \u20ac250 for photographic equipment, along with passes to the three sites of the Astronomical Observatories of Ireland \u2013 DIAS Dunsink Observatory, Armagh Observatory and Planetarium, and Birr Castle Demesne.<\/p>\n<p>Two runner-up prizes from each of the Out of this World and Back on Earth categories will also be awarded vouchers to the value of \u20ac250 for photographic equipment and passes to the three sites of the Astronomical Observatories of Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>Winning and highly commended images will also be included in exhibitions at DIAS Headquarters, Burlington Road, Dublin 4 and at DIAS Dunsink Observatory later in 2026. Furthermore, all shortlisted images will be included in an online exhibition on the competition website\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reachforthestars.ie\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">www.reachforthestars.ie<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>DIAS\u2019s \u2018Reach for the Stars\u2019 competition is being run in partnership with\u00a0The Irish Times, and is sponsored by\u00a0MKC Communications\u00a0and The Astronomical Observatories of Ireland.
