{"id":411813,"date":"2026-04-22T13:41:17","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T13:41:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/411813\/"},"modified":"2026-04-22T13:41:17","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T13:41:17","slug":"openai-pledges-1-5-billion-to-pe-enterprise-ai-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/411813\/","title":{"rendered":"OpenAI Pledges $1.5 Billion to PE Enterprise AI Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OpenAI<\/a> has reportedly committed up to $1.5 billion for its private equity (PE) venture.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/87727c4e-05c4-4d84-a9de-4190a9d681a6?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> Wednesday (April 22) from the Financial Times (FT), which characterizes the move as part of the startup\u2019s plan to overtake chief competitor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anthropic<\/a> in the race to sell artificial intelligence (AI) tools to businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Sources with knowledge of the matter told the FT that OpenAI will contribute an initial $500 million in its equity into the joint venture, with the option to add another $1 billion later.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The venture will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/artificial-intelligence-2\/2026\/openai-plans-10-billion-in-partnerships-with-pe-firms\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">valued at $10 billion<\/a> as part of a funding round expected to close early next month, the sources said. OpenAI\u2019s PE plans had been reported by Reuters in March. Additional reporting said the company has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/artificial-intelligence-2\/2026\/openai-operations-chief-changes-jobs-amid-ipo-preparations\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reassigned<\/a> its chief operating officer to oversee the project.<\/p>\n<p>Investors such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tpg.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">TPG<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baincapital.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bain Capital<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adventinternational.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Advent International<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookfield.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brookfield<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/goannacapital.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Goanna Capital<\/a> will invest an additional $4 billion, sources told the FT. The private equity backers will invest for five years, and OpenAI has promised them an annual 17.5% return.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is a floor\u2009.\u2009.\u2009. but we expect it to be much higher,\u201d said a person with knowledge of the plans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">Advertisement: Scroll to Continue<\/p>\n<p>The new venture \u201cgenerates revenue by being the best in the world at AI deployment, at rewiring businesses. If we\u2019re very early in this cycle [of AI adoption], then that\u2019s a very valuable asset,\u201d that source said.<\/p>\n<p>The FT had reported earlier this month that Anthropic was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/artificial-intelligence-2\/2026\/anthropic-gains-on-openai-amid-rising-adoption-among-enterprises\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gaining on OpenAI<\/a> as more businesses adopt its tools.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The report cited figures from payments company Ramp showing Anthropic increasing its share of enterprise customers, while OpenAI\u2019s business adoption levels were flat. OpenAI has disputed the FT\u2019s findings.<\/p>\n<p>The news follows a recent Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report saying OpenAI was working with consulting firms to sell companies on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/artificial-intelligence-2\/2026\/openai-taps-consultants-to-help-land-enterprise-ai-clients\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coding product<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelping companies bridge that gap between how to use it, how to expand it and how to move even more quickly is part of our responsibility, and these partnerships are going to allow us to help scale that to the world,\u201d OpenAI Chief Revenue Officer <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/openai-appoints-denise-dresser\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Denise Dresser<\/a> told the WSJ.<\/p>\n<p>As covered here previously, Anthriopic is also in discussions about its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/artificial-intelligence-2\/2026\/anthropic-making-200-million-bet-on-new-enterprise-arm\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">own joint venture<\/a> that would see it sell its AI tools to the private equity firms\u2019 clients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnthropic has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/artificial-intelligence-2\/2026\/ais-push-for-consumer-scale-and-enterprise-infrastructure\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">repositioning Claude<\/a> from a conversational assistant into a tool embedded in enterprise operations,\u201d PYMNTS wrote last month, in reference to the startup\u2019s flagship AI product.
