Minister for Housing and Local Government James Browne will later sign the election order to officially set the date for two D\u00e1il bye-elections.<\/p>\n

Voters will cast their ballots in the Dublin Central and Galway West constituencies on Friday 22 May.<\/p>\n

Although bye-elections do not always follow national polling trends, the diverse nature of these particular constituencies may give an insight into voter sentiment after the recent fuel protests.<\/p>\n

In the D\u00e1il last night, Fine Gael’s Emer Currie moved the Dublin Central writ for the bye-election to fill the vacancy created by the departure of former Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe.<\/p>\n

The second vacancy in Galway West arises from Catherine Connolly’s election as President of Ireland last year. After moving the writ for Galway West, People Before TD Richard Boyd Barret said “get the posters up”.<\/p>\n

The deadline for nominations closes at midday on 1 May. However, ten candidates have already declared their intention to run in Dublin Central with 13 coming forward in Galway West.<\/p>\n

Government parties have a poor record in bye-elections and so Opposition Parties and Independents will seek to make gains. However, the results would not significantly alter the Government’s D\u00e1il majority.<\/p>\n
