And with only five white aprons up for grabs, there was little room for error.<\/p>\n<p>Lawrence, 69, Kearney, Mo. That was enough to end Lawrence\u2019s run, as Gordon delivered a quick no.<\/p>\n<p>Aishu, 33, Boston, Mass. When his family immigrated to the United States, his mother couldn\u2019t repay those who helped them \u2014 so she cooked, making egg rolls to share with friends. Now, as she battles dementia, Foo said he cooks to honor her.<\/p>\n<p>Joe said the dish tasted nothing like a restaurant spring roll \u2014 \u201cit tastes like history and culture\u201d \u2014 calling it a 100% yes. Tiffany praised the egg rolls as \u201cjuicy\u201d and \u201ca really good bite,\u201d adding that even the dipping sauce felt elevated. Now based in Brooklyn, she was eager to showcase how her Bengali roots have evolved in her cooking.<\/p>\n<p>Her halibut bhuna with fragrant rice and dal immediately impressed the judges.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon called the dish \u201celegant\u201d and praised the beautifully cooked fish, noting only that the dal needed a touch more seasoning. Tiffany described the halibut as \u201cgorgeous\u201d and the sauce as \u201cfabulous,\u201d while Joe was struck by how professionally the dish was executed.<\/p>\n<p>It was an easy call \u2014 Shompa earned a white apron.<\/p>\n<p>Tony, Minneapolis, Minn. (South Korea)<\/p>\n<p>Tony, who was adopted, said the dish he prepared is one he\u2019s eaten every year on his arrival day \u2014 now elevated as a way to connect with his heritage and share those flavors with other Korean adoptees.<\/p>\n<p>His miso-marinated ribeye with kimchi fried rice had strong elements, but ultimately fell short.<\/p>\n<p>Joe said the steak looked \u201cpoached\u201d and needed more of a crust, even as he praised the rice as \u201cdelicious.\u201d With the ribeye slightly overcooked and lacking a proper sear, it wasn\u2019t enough to move forward.<\/p>\n<p>Tony was sent home.<\/p>\n<p>Iman, Md. (Afghanistan)<\/p>\n<p>Iman described herself as a \u201cbuffet of a personality,\u201d drawing inspiration from the large, shareable platters common in Afghan cuisine.<\/p>\n<p>Her lamb qabuli palau with honey-glazed carrots and herb chutney showed promise, but the protein proved to be the downfall.<\/p>\n<p>Joe pointed out that the lamb was overcooked and dry, and couldn\u2019t overlook the mistake, quickly delivering a no.<\/p>\n<p>Jaime, 27, Queens, N.Y. With more than 2 million followers across her platforms, she\u2019s now chasing a dream of opening a food truck with him.<\/p>\n<p>Her wagyu beef satay with peanut sauce and coconut rice delivered on both flavor and presentation.<\/p>\n<p>Tiffany loved the char on the meat, calling it a \u201cbeautiful plate,\u201d while Joe didn\u2019t hesitate with a resounding yes. Gordon said the dish was authentic and delicious.<\/p>\n<p>Jaime earned an easy white apron.<\/p>\n<p>Fatima, 40, Bartlett, Ill. More importantly, the lamb was undercooked, and he noted he would have preferred goat instead. Joe agreed, calling it a poor ingredient choice.<\/p>\n<p>It was a no for Fatima.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel, 23, Johns Creek, Ga.
