{"id":414294,"date":"2026-04-24T00:02:20","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T00:02:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/414294\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T00:02:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T00:02:20","slug":"japan-core-inflation-accelerates-after-five-months-as-iran-war-pushes-energy-prices-higher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/414294\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan core inflation accelerates after five months as Iran war pushes energy prices higher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Customers check out vegetables and other groceries at a supermarket in Tokyo on June 20, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Kazuhiro Nogi | Afp | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Core inflation in Japan accelerated for the first time in five months, rising to 1.8% in March as Iran war-fueled higher energy prices stoke consumer inflation. <\/p>\n<p>Government data showed the inflation figure \u2014 which strips out prices of fresh food \u2014 was in line with the 1.8% expected by economists polled by Reuters, and was higher than the 1.6% seen in February <\/p>\n<p>Headline inflation came in at 1.5%, compared with 1.3% in February, staying below the central bank&#8217;s 2% target for a second straight month. <\/p>\n<p>The so-called &#8220;core-core&#8221; inflation rate, which strips out prices of both food and energy, dipped to 2.4% from February&#8217;s 2.5%, marking its lowest level since October 2024.  <\/p>\n<p>Rice inflation, which had made headlines in mid-2025 for exceeding 100%, rose 6.8%, its slowest pace since January 2024. <\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boj.or.jp\/en\/research\/o_survey\/ishiki2604.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bank of Japan survey<\/a> released Monday showed that more than 83% of the respondents expect prices to be higher after one year.<\/p>\n<p>Bank of America analyst Takayasu Kudo said in note earlier this week that the effects of higher energy prices are likely to become more pronounced starting summer, which will push up both actual inflation and inflation expectations. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These developments should reinforce the case for the BOJ\u00a0to maintain its gradual rate-hiking trajectory &#8230; we still see a strong likelihood that the BOJ will\u00a0maintain a bias toward further rate hikes\u00a0over the medium term.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The inflation figures come ahead of the BOJ&#8217;s meeting on April 27 and 28, where the central bank is expected to hold rates at 0.75%, according to Citi analysts. <\/p>\n<p>Citi said the hold is &#8220;likely to be hawkish,&#8221; adding that this was due to concerns about further yen depreciation and the risk of falling behind the curve on inflation. <\/p>\n<p>Japan had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.cao.go.jp\/en\/sna\/data\/sokuhou\/files\/2025\/qe254_2\/pdf\/gaiyou2542_e.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">narrowly avoided a technical recession<\/a> in the last quarter of 2025, with the country&#8217;s economy growing at a revised 0.3% quarter on quarter and 1.3% year-on-year. <\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Reuters, citing sources familiar with the BOJ&#8217;s thinking, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/bank-japan-seen-dropping-hawkish-signs-even-it-keeps-rates-steady-2026-04-23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reported the<\/a> central bank was set to cut its growth forecast for the 2026 fiscal year that began in \u200bApril, and to also sharply revise up its inflation forecast for the fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/preferences\/source?q=https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Choose CNBC as your preferred source on Google and never miss a moment from the most trusted name in business news.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Customers check out vegetables and other groceries at a supermarket in Tokyo on June 20, 2025.
