{"id":414847,"date":"2026-04-24T07:59:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T07:59:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/414847\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T07:59:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T07:59:11","slug":"us-troop-numbers-passing-through-shannon-soar-80-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/414847\/","title":{"rendered":"US troop numbers passing through Shannon soar 80% \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/united-states\">United States<\/a> troops travelling through Ireland has increased by almost 80 per cent before and during US attacks on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iran\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/iran\/\">Iran<\/a>, figures obtained by The Irish Times show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In January, 2,012 troops passed through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/shannon\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/shannon\">Shannon<\/a> Airport. The following month, as the US and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/israel\">Israel<\/a> prepared for war, that figure rose to 2,602. In March, after the start of the conflict, it increased to 3,604. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In total, 8,218 US troops transited through Shannon, according to figures provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/shannon-airport-group\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/shannon-airport-group\/\">Shannon Airport Group<\/a>. The March figure represents a 79 per cent increase on the numbers arriving in January.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Earlier this week it was revealed that the number of overflights of Irish airspace by US military aircraft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/04\/18\/us-military-flights-over-ireland-vastly-underreported-due-to-government-administrative-error\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has also increased dramatically<\/a> since the war began at the end of February.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The Government has denied facilitating the US attacks by allowing US forces to use Irish airspace. It has also rejected Opposition calls to close Irish airspace to US military involved in the war, similar to measures taken by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/spain\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/spain\/\">Spain<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/switzerland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/switzerland\/\">Switzerland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"www.irishtimes.com\/ireland\/2026\/04\/18\/us-military-flights-over-ireland-vastly-underreported-due-to-government-administrative-error\/\">248 US military flights over Ireland went unreported due to \u2018administrative error\u2019<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The US has been using Shannon as a refuelling stop for troop transports for decades. In the 10 years after its invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, around two million soldiers passed through the airport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Its use by US forces has long been protested against by peace and neutrality campaigners. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Over the years, many campaigners have been charged with attempting to gain access to the airport to protest against the US presence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Last week, a man was arrested for allegedly attacking a US troop transport aircraft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/crime-law\/2026\/04\/12\/man-arrested-over-alleged-attack-on-us-military-aircraft\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with a hatchet<\/a> after it landed in Shannon Airport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Soldiers transiting through the airport in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/clare\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/clare\">Co Clare<\/a> are typically armed with personnel weapons. File image. Photograph: Matt Kavanagh <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, Irish authorities do not carry out inspections of US aircraft to enforce this regulation. They also rarely deny permission for weapons to be transported through Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Monday, The Irish Times revealed how the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-foreign-affairs\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/department-of-foreign-affairs\/\">Department of Foreign Affairs<\/a> had failed to report almost 250 overflights by US military aircraft since last summer due to what was said was an \u201cadministrative error\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The unreported figures included a 56 per cent increase in US military overflights of Ireland in March after the attacks on Iran began.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Responding to Opposition criticism following the report, Taoiseach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\">Miche\u00e1l Martin<\/a> said he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/04\/20\/taoiseach-says-departments-failure-to-report-us-military-overflights-is-not-normal\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/politics\/2026\/04\/20\/taoiseach-says-departments-failure-to-report-us-military-overflights-is-not-normal\/\">concerned and surprised<\/a> by the underreporting, which has since been corrected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Asked if the State were facilitating the war\u2019s continuance by failing to prohibit the military overflights, he said: \u201cI think it\u2019s a stretch by any yardstick to suggest that the Government is facilitating the war because of overflight. I don\u2019t think that\u2019s a sustainable proposition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Separately, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> has said he has ordered the US navy to \u201cshoot and kill\u201d boats placing mines in the Strait of Hormuz as the struggle between the US and Iran to control international shipping continued.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On social media, the US president said: \u201cI have ordered the United States Navy to shoot and kill any boat, small boats though they may be &#8230; that is putting mines in the waters of the Strait of Hormuz. There is to be no hesitation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Iran closed the strait after the war was started by the US and Israel on February 28th. Tehran says it will not reopen the waterway, a route for a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas, until the US lifts its blockade of Iran\u2019s shipping. Washington imposed its blockade during the fragile ceasefire, which began on April 8th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Washington said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/middle-east\/2026\/04\/23\/us-intercepts-oil-tanker-carrying-iranian-oil-in-indian-ocean\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/middle-east\/2026\/04\/23\/us-intercepts-oil-tanker-carrying-iranian-oil-in-indian-ocean\/\">US forces boarded a tanker in the Indian Ocean<\/a> on Thursday.
