He channelled the band’s grief over their late drummer Taylor Hawkins on their 2023 album But Here We Are and then confronted his own demons over revelations about his marital infidelity.

As he told The Guardian newspaper recently, he has been “in therapy six days a week for 70 weeks… over 430 sessions.” Recent personal upheavals have certainly left him with plenty to say – or rather seethe with throat-shedding fury on Your Favorite Toy, the Foos’ twelfth album and their first with new drummer Ilan Rubin. As he remarked in a recent interview, “There’s not a lot of fiction on this record.”

But self-lacerating honesty may have left 57-year-old Grohl with more questions than answers. As he screams on piledriving opening track Caught In The Echo: “Do I? Do I? Do I? Do I?”. By the song’s coda, he’s collapsing in a heap and asking “Who can save us now?”. On the title track he seems to be confronting his own public image as “the nicest man in rock”: “Dead gardens from bad seeds/But nice guys grow on trees”.

All the usual Foos’ moves are here – cathartic guitars, soaring choruses, and a combustible engine room but Grohl’s scattershot lyrics and vocal rawness give this short, sharp 34 minutes a reinvigorated sense of gobby punk abandon.

Themes of surviving against all odds through death (whether it was his former band mates Kurt Cobain or Hawkins) and personal crisis are once again prominent – however, on album stand-out Of All People, a rueful Grohl tells the tale of an encounter with a drug dealer he knew in the 1990s – the pusher has somehow survived while many of his clientele have succumbed. Elsewhere, Window’s eerie psychedelia and nagging riff nods to Grohl’s sometime band QOTSA and Nirvana contemporaries The Breeders, while the title track unleashes a ferocious wall of sound and some enjoyably splenetic lyrics.

The mournful Child Actor further unravels Grohl’s restlessness and imposter syndrome: “As I chase all the roles I’ve lost, was I good enough?”, and nobody is going to begrudge Foos their direct lift from Led Zep’s Whole Lotta Love on the whirling dervish that is Spit Shine.

There’s a fresh melodic punch to this latest chapter of spleen-venting and demon-chasing. Foos’ sometimes hidebound rock classicalism gives way to a gnarly, dissatisfied sense of loss and confusion.

This carnage of riffage is a messy, restless career high for the veteran act.

This carnage of riffage is a messy, restless career high for the veteran act It’s been quite a…

[28
93,61,60,278
0":"post-414946","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-music","8":"tag-entertainment","9":"tag-ie","10":"tag-ireland","11":"tag-music
["GET
