{"id":417038,"date":"2026-04-25T15:15:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T15:15:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/417038\/"},"modified":"2026-04-25T15:15:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T15:15:09","slug":"up-to-90-of-adults-with-adhd-have-diagnosis-for-separate-condition-says-gp-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/417038\/","title":{"rendered":"Up to 90% of adults with ADHD have diagnosis for separate condition, says GP \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Between 80 and 90 per cent of adults diagnosed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/adhd\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/adhd\/\">ADHD<\/a> also have another diagnosis such as difficulties with sleeping or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mental-health\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/mental-health\/\">anxiety<\/a>, a leading general practitioner has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The number of people being diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder has increased in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The rise has largely been attributed to underdiagnosis of women, and boys and men who were quieter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dr Aoife O\u2019Sullivan, clinical lead for mental health at the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP), said ADHD rarely exists alone. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She added that for many people these co-morbidities could be partially a result of going undiagnosed for so many years and not having the treatment or support they needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe most common ones \u2013 so common you\u2019d nearly consider them part of the diagnosis \u2013 are sleep issues. They have difficulty getting to sleep. Cognition insomnia \u2013 you\u2019re exhausted but you\u2019re brain keeps going,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cAnxiety on some level. It mightn\u2019t be a diagnosed anxiety disorder, but a lot of people talk about being an anxious person. It\u2019s years and years of working really hard to do normal things, and anxiety is just a natural reaction to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Sullivan cited figures from ADHD Ireland which found 20 per cent of adults with ADHD have attempted suicide in their lifetime and 50 per cent of adults with ADHD have self-harmed at some stage in the past. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/health\/2025\/08\/13\/adhd-medication-can-reduce-risk-of-suicide-substance-misuse-and-criminality-for-newly-diagnosed-study-finds\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ADHD medication can reduce risk of suicide, substance misuse and criminality for newly diagnosed, study findsOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThat\u2019s really stark. It shows the levels of mood disorder whether anxiety or depression and the real impact that has,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cA lot of our adults with ADHD are late diagnosis; they\u2019ve lived varying amount of years undiagnosed. I think that\u2019s partially why there are so many co-morbidities in a way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She added: \u201cThe longer this has gone, the more likely it is you have anxiety or low mood because it hasn\u2019t been addressed. And then there are things like rejection sensitivity dysphoria; people having difficulties trusting in relationships or being very sensitive to perceived criticism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">O\u2019Sullivan was speaking at the annual Irish College of General Practitioners conference in south Dublin on Saturday, which also heard about trends in menopause care and hormone replacement therapy (HRT).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Dr Ciara McCarthy, the GP clinical lead for women\u2019s health, said there has been \u201ca surge\u201d in demand for menopause care in recent years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cFrom 2020 to 2022, prescribing exponentially increased. The number of items of HRT medication that was prescribed in 2020 was around 80,000. By 2022, it was over 240,000,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The data is from the HSE\u2019s reimbursement system, which covers medical cards, but does not include private patients.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">McCarthy also noted the data predates the provision of free HRT from June last year, and attributes the jump to greater awareness and women being more comfortable seeking help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cMenopause symptoms has an impact on quality of life for women and they are becoming more proactive about seeking out help,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cThe other really interesting thing we can see from that data &#8230; over that time period there were changes in trends of prescribing.
