Princess Anne stepped out at daybreak this morning to observe Anzac Day. The Princess Royal, representing her brother King Charles, attended the Dawn Service at Wellington Arch in Hyde Park Corner.<\/p>\n

Observed each year on April 25, Anzac Day\u2014referencing the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, or ANZAC\u2014marks the anniversary of the landings at Gallipoli, when Australian and New Zealand soldiers (as part of Allied forces) arrived in the Turkish city and captured it from the Ottoman Empire during World War I. Anzac Day has become a broader commemoration, however, of all Australian and New Zealanders who served and died in conflicts around the world.<\/p>\n

Today is not her first time participating in the dawn service; she also did so in 2021 and 2015.<\/p>\n

Anzac Day has been observed in London since King George V attended the first service at Westminster Abbey in 1916; today, the Princess of Wales will attend the annual service on behalf of the royal family.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been a busy week for the royals; on Tuesday, the royal family marked the 100th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth\u2019s birth<\/a>. As part of the celebrations, Princess Anne opened the Queen Elizabeth II Garden<\/a>, a new two\u2011acre garden in Regent\u2019s Park in London. \u201cGardens are important for a number of reasons, in terms of historical perspective,\u201d Princess Anne said during a speech at the event<\/a>. \u201cWhen [Queen Elizabeth] was growing up, the gardens were one aspect of life that changed dramatically during the war to become places where everybody grew things, and then the spaces afterwards became used for other things. This is a lovely evolution of that whole voyage of garden design.\u201d<\/p>\n
