The central booster hosts an upper stage, which is integrated with the payload.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-624aa8c9-91f4-4db3-94a5-1b429a689709-1\">Together, these three boosters generate about 5.1 million pounds of thrust at liftoff, making Falcon Heavy the second-most-powerful launcher in operation today. The leader is NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33908-space-launch-system.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33908-space-launch-system.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33908-space-launch-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Space Launch System<\/a> (SLS) moon rocket, which generates 8.8 million pounds. (SpaceX&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starship-super-heavy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Starship<\/a> creates a whopping 16.7 million pounds of thrust at liftoff, but it&#8217;s still in development.)<\/p>\n<p>Falcon Heavy debuted in February 2018 with a test flight that launched SpaceX founder <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18849-elon-musk.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18849-elon-musk.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18849-elon-musk.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elon Musk<\/a>&#8216;s cherry-red Tesla Roadster <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/43242-spacex-falcon-heavy-starman-tesla-launch-anniversary.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/43242-spacex-falcon-heavy-starman-tesla-launch-anniversary.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/43242-spacex-falcon-heavy-starman-tesla-launch-anniversary.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">into orbit around the sun<\/a>. The rocket has since flown 10 more missions, every one of them successful.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s been a while since Falcon Heavy breathed fire: It <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-falcon-heavy-europa-clipper-launch\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-falcon-heavy-europa-clipper-launch\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-falcon-heavy-europa-clipper-launch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">last launched in October 2024<\/a>, sending NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/europa-clipper-mission-explained\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/europa-clipper-mission-explained\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/europa-clipper-mission-explained\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Europa Clipper<\/a> spacecraft toward the Jupiter system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-6b7c7205-f3eb-41a9-b7ab-6d8e0702f1dd\">ViaSat-3 F3 isn&#8217;t going nearly that far afield. The 6.6-ton (6 metric tons) satellite is headed to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29222-geosynchronous-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29222-geosynchronous-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29222-geosynchronous-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">geostationary orbit<\/a> (GEO) which lies 22,236 miles (35,786 kilometers) above Earth. At that altitude, orbital velocity matches our planet&#8217;s rotational speed, allowing satellites to &#8220;hover&#8221; over the same patch of real estate continuously.<\/p>\n<p>ViaSat-3 F3&#8217;s patch is a big one: The satellite will provide high-throughput broadband service to customers throughout the Asia-Pacific region.<\/p>\n<p>As its name suggests, ViaSat-3 F3 will be the third ViaSat-3 satellite to reach orbit. ViaSat-3 F1 did so atop a Falcon Heavy <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-falcon-heavy-sixth-mission-launch-viasat-3-americas\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-falcon-heavy-sixth-mission-launch-viasat-3-americas\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-falcon-heavy-sixth-mission-launch-viasat-3-americas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in April 2023<\/a>, and ViaSat-3 F2 followed suit <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/ula-atlas-v-rocket-viasat-3-f2-launch\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/ula-atlas-v-rocket-viasat-3-f2-launch\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/ula-atlas-v-rocket-viasat-3-f2-launch\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in November 2025<\/a> aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V.<\/p>\n<p>            What to read next<\/p>\n<p>ViaSat-3 F1 currently provides service to customers aboard airliners, and ViaSat-3 F2 will serve people in the Americas when it comes online next month. ViaSat-3 F3 will round out the ViaSat-3 mini-constellation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This launch marks a pivotal moment in our journey to bring fast, secure and reliable high capacity, highly flexible broadband to our commercial, defense and consumer customers,&#8221; Dave Abrahamian, ViaSat&#8217;s vice president of space systems, said in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.viasat.com\/news\/latest-news\/corporate\/2026\/viasat-3-flight-3-arrives-florida-launch\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.viasat.com\/news\/latest-news\/corporate\/2026\/viasat-3-flight-3-arrives-florida-launch\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">company statement<\/a> earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>The Falcon Heavy&#8217;s two side boosters will come back for a landing at Florida&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33926-cape-canaveral.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33926-cape-canaveral.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33926-cape-canaveral.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cape Canaveral Space Force Station<\/a> about eight minutes after launch on Monday, if all goes to plan. The central booster won&#8217;t be recovered; it will fall into the Atlantic Ocean when its work is done.<\/p>\n<p>The Falcon Heavy&#8217;s upper stage, meanwhile, will carry ViaSat-3 F3 to geosynchronous transfer orbit, deploying it there about five hours after launch.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Watch Live!
