\"Sudha Sudha Chandran<\/a> has opened up about one of the most defining chapters of her life\u2014from losing her leg at 16 to returning to the stage with a powerful three-hour Bharatanatyam recital. In a recent conversation, the actor-dancer reflected on pain, resilience, and the moment she realised she had truly made a comeback.<\/p>\n

\u2018It was a choice between life and my leg\u2019<\/p>\n

Recalling the accident that changed everything, Sudha<\/a> shared that she wasn\u2019t heading to a competition, as many assume. \u201cI was returning from our kuldevta temple when the accident happened. It\u2019s not that I lost my leg immediately, but due to complications and medical negligence, after 25 days, a decision had to be taken\u2014life or leg,\u201d she told Bollywood Bubble. She was just 16 at the time. \u201cI was a minor, so I couldn\u2019t even take that decision. My parents chose life. When I was told, I said, \u2018I don\u2019t want to live. What will I do by living?\u2019\u201dThat phase led her to question everything. \u201cI kept asking\u2014what mistake did I make to deserve this? That\u2019s when I started thinking about karma.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amid the darkness, an unexpected moment gave her hope. \u201cA family friend who was a well-known astrologer came to see me in the hospital. He told my mother, \u2018This is just a short phase. This girl will see great success and will create history.\u2019\u201d\u201cAt that time, I couldn\u2019t believe it. I thought, what can I possibly do now? But his words turned out to be true.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018I couldn\u2019t afford to break\u2014for my parents\u2019<\/p>\n

Talking about her first performance after the accident, Sudha admitted she wasn\u2019t fearless. \u201cI\u2019m human. There was always doubt. Until that day, I kept telling myself I will do it\u2014but that was also a defense mechanism.\u201dHer biggest motivation was her parents. \u201cEverything I did was for them. I had seen their sacrifices. My only prayer was\u2014don\u2019t let me fall. If I broke, my parents would never recover.\u201dShe even recalls confronting God. \u201cI said, don\u2019t let my dignity be shattered. If that happens, I won\u2019t be able to face life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018It was a three-hour recital, not easy at all\u2019<\/p>\n

The comeback wasn\u2019t a small step\u2014it was a full-fledged Bharatanatyam recital. \u201cIt was not a 10-minute performance. It was a three-hour recital, with intense footwork, abhinaya, and a 45\u201350 minute non-stop varnam based on the Ramayana.\u201dEven when her mother requested her guru to shorten the performance, he refused. \u201cHe said, whatever she performed before the accident, she will perform the same now. That became his challenge too.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u2018There were 1000 people… I wasn\u2019t prepared\u2019<\/p>\n

Sudha had asked her family to keep the audience small. \u201cBut when I reached, it was a housefull show\u2014about 1000 people, with many standing. I asked, \u2018Who invited all of them?\u2019 My mother said, \u2018Don\u2019t think about that. Just go and perform.\u2019\u201dStanding in the wings, she felt the nerves kick in. \u201cThose butterflies\u2026 they are always there.\u201dEven today, she embraces that feeling. \u201cThe butterflies are a very good sign. For any actor or artist, it is important to feel them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018When they said \u201cWelcome back Sudha,\u201d I didn\u2019t look back\u2019<\/p>\n

The turning point came the moment she stepped on stage. \u201cWhen I entered and heard the audience say in one voice, \u2018Welcome back, Sudha,\u2019 after that I didn\u2019t look back.\u201dShe performed through every segment without pause. \u201cI don\u2019t remember how one item ended and the next began. Only when I performed the mangalam did I realise\u2014I had done it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The first person she looked for was her mother. \u201cShe was standing in the wings. She hadn\u2019t moved for three hours. She had tears of joy.\u201dThen came the moment she treasures the most. \u201cI was searching for my father. He was sitting at the back. When he came to me, he touched my feet.\u201dFor Sudha, that gesture remains unmatched. \u201cAll my awards on one side\u2014and that moment on the other. That is the biggest award of my life.
