HBO host Bill Maher described Democratic New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani as a \u201ccommunist\u201d Monday, surprising his guest, left-wing comedian David Cross.<\/p>\n
Mamdani has called<\/a> for massive tax increases on top income earners, a rent freeze, free day care and city-run grocery stores as part of a far-left policy agenda<\/a> during his successful mayoral campaign. Cross and Maher started to clash during Monday\u2019s episode<\/a> of Maher\u2019s \u201cClub Random\u201d podcast when Cross described himself as a \u201cDemocrat Socialist.\u201d (RELATED: Mayor Mamdani Says Exodus From NYC Is Just Your Imagination)<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cYou\u2019re plainly to the left of me if you even say you\u2019re a socialist,\u201d Maher replied.<\/p>\n \u201cWell, I said Democratic Socialist,\u201d Cross, who is married to actress Amber Tamblyn, reiterated.<\/p>\n WATCH:<\/p>\n \u201cI know what \u2018Democratic Socialist\u2019 is, that\u2019s Mamdani. Who\u2019s a straight up communist,\u201d Maher shot back.<\/p>\n \u201cNo, he\u2019s not! No, he\u2019s not! Bill!\u201d Cross insisted while laughing.<\/p>\n The New York State Assembly in March released<\/a> a budget proposal that included some tax increases on wealthy New Yorkers and corporations Mamdani has championed \u2014 even though the state already has one of the highest tax burdens<\/a> in the country.<\/p>\n \u201cHe is, first of all. He has someone working for him named Cea Weaver. Have you read about her?\u201d Maher asked.<\/p>\n \u201cI have not,\u201d Cross responded.<\/p>\n \u201cSee, that means you\u2019re in a bubble. Because you should have,\u201d the HBO host told him.<\/p>\n \u201cOkay,\u201d the left-wing comedian replied, telling Maher to \u201cedify\u201d him.<\/p>\n \u201cShe\u2019s the head of like, \u2018We\u2019re going to fix housing.\u2019 This is like what got him elected,\u201d Maher told Cross. \u201cHe has not disavowed her and I could show you all her tweets that she\u2019s put out over the last few years and quotes, and one of them is \u2018elect more communists.’\u201d<\/p>\n Weaver called for more communists to be elected to office in a December 2017 post<\/a> to X (then known as Twitter). Just six months later she wrote<\/a> \u201cSeize private property!\u201d on the platform.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t think you have to read between the lines if somebody he stands with and by is saying that. And also, her other quotes are like, \u2018All home ownership is racist,’\u201d Maher told Cross.<\/p>\n \u201cWell, that\u2019s ridiculous,\u201d Cross admitted. \u201cI have an issue with that thing that she said. I don\u2019t know this woman. I will definitely look her up. I\u2019m a fan of Mamdani\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n Mamdani appointed<\/a> Weaver as director of the Office to Protect Tenants when he took office in January.
