\n\tAnother new album cycle for Olivia Rodrigo<\/a>, another No. 1 debut on the Billboard Hot 100<\/a> for its lead single.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter \u201cDrivers License\u201d (from Sour) and \u201cVampire\u201d (from Guts) both led off their respective eras by entering atop Billboard\u2018s marquee songs chart, on this week\u2019s Hot 100 (dated May 2), Rodrigo makes it three-for-three with the No. 1 bow<\/a> of \u201cDrop Dead,\u201d from her upcoming You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love album. The song\u2019s first-week performance was assisted by a full promotional push, including the release of multiple variants of the song and its music video.<\/p>\n

\n\tHow big a deal is Olivia\u2019s third straight No. 1-debuting lead single? And does it presage a particularly major turn in direction for upcoming album? Billboard staffers discuss these questions and more below.<\/p>\n

\t\t1.\u00a0Olivia\u00a0Rodrigo debuts atop the Hot 100 for the fourth time in her career with the lead single, \u201cDrop Dead,\u201d from her upcoming album,\u00a0You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love. Is this a major career accomplishment for her, or is it just business as usual for one of the biggest new stars of the 2020s?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tKyle Denis: Business\u00a0as usual. But it was fun to watch one of the biggest new stars of the 2020s sweat a little bit to beat out Ella Langley\u2019s \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAnnie Harrigan: Is it a cop out to say both? Rodrigo is three for three in terms of chart-topping lead singles, that is an incredible accomplishment. Killing it on the charts has also become par for the course for the Gen-Z icon. I\u2019m both very happy for her and not at all surprised.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tLyndsey Havens: It feels like a major accomplishment, though an expected one for Rodrigo. With each album, more than anything she has proven to be a very consistent hitmaker \u2014 and considering how high she set the bar with her debut single \u201cDrivers License,\u201d she\u2019s even made it look easy. That said, it\u2019s worth noting that \u201cDrop Dead\u201d did come with a handful of versions for fans to consume, helping boost it to its top spot, but that hardly takes away from it landing there anyway.<\/p>\n

\n\tRebecca Milzoff: It\u2019s not a\u00a0huge\u00a0shock considering\u00a0Olivia\u2019s profile, but it feels like an at least notable achievement considering that, this time around, the stakes were a bit higher than usual: she was up against Ella Langley\u2019s historic<\/a> monster hit \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas\u201d atop the chart, with a different\u00a0Olivia\u00a0(Dean) close behind.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAndrew Unterberger: Business as usual, and business is good. <\/p>\n

\t\t2. Does the sound and feeling of \u201cDrop Dead\u201d portend a major shift in direction for Rodrigo to you, or is it\u00a0a fairly natural\u00a0evolution from her last two lead singles?\u00a0\t<\/p>\n

\n\tKyle Denis: This definitely feels like a natural evolution from the last two\u00a0lead singles.\u00a0The chorus of \u201cVampire\u201d alone promised a less ballad-heavy Rodrigo, and\u00a0Guts\u00a0delivered on that.\u00a0In fact, \u201cDrop Dead\u201d\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0worlds\u00a0away from the spunky midtempos (\u201cPretty Isn\u2019t Pretty\u201d and \u201cLove Is Embarassing\u201d) that help close out her sophomore album.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAnnie Harrigan: I think \u201cDrop Dead\u201d is a natural evolution in Rodrigo\u2019s sound from \u201cDrivers License\u201d and \u201cVampire\u201d for sure. I think one thing Rodrigo does really well is a buildup in a song. Across all three lead singles, she starts off pretty pulled back, and as the song continues, the sound gets bigger and bigger and explodes into a big cinematic moment production-wise. In \u201cDrop Dead,\u201d I think that big instrumental explosion is the most upbeat it\u2019s been yet, and I love how it continues into the talk-singing second verse. I think \u201cDrop Dead\u201d shows a growth in her sound without completely shifting to something unbeknownst to her and her fans \u2014 it\u2019s new but still on-brand.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tLyndsey Havens: Until just now, I forgot \u201cVampire\u201d was the lead single on\u00a0Guts.\u00a0To me, that signals that \u201cDrop Dead\u201d might not indicate any major shifts \u2026 While \u201cDrivers License\u201d and \u201cVampire\u201d were both hits in their own right, I wouldn\u2019t argue that their sound defined their respective albums (Sour\u00a0and\u00a0Guts). Rather, it seems Rodrigo uses her lead single to wow the crowd \u2014 be it with her songwriting, vocals or emotive production \u2014 but never to necessarily reveal all that\u2019s still to come.<\/p>\n

\n\tRebecca Milzoff: Nah, it feels like a natural evolution.\u00a0Olivia\u2019s songs as typically fall into one of two camps \u2014 the more downtempo, introspective tracks showcasing her songwriting chops, and the angstier, guitar-driven ones showing she can rock out.\u00a0\u201cDrop Dead\u201d feels like perhaps a bit of a happy medium between the two vibes, but while its bridge has an enjoyable girls-with-electric-guitars moment, but with its dreamy, ultra-romantic vibe ultimately leans\u00a0more in the former direction, as both \u201cDrivers License\u201d and \u201cvampire\u201d have.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAndrew Unterberger: It\u2019s a natural evolution, but it\u2019s also a bit of a swerve \u2014\u00a0particularly in that title, which seemed designed to elicit eye rolls for its implied third straight trip to post-breakup kiss-off territory, and turned out to be a total red herring for what the song actually is. It\u2019s definitely a clever choice for a first single back after a few years. <\/p>\n

\t\t3. Rodrigo has been extremely involved in the promotion of \u201cDrop Dead,\u201d giving radio interviews, making a surprise Coachella appearance alongside Addison Rae, popping out at Brooklyn open\u00a0mics\u00a0and releasing multiple variants of both the single and its music video. Does it feel like the right promo strategy for the new song, or does it\u00a0feel like\u00a0too much already with the full\u00a0Pretty Sad\u00a0album still a month and a half away?\u00a0\u00a0\t<\/p>\n

\n\tKyle Denis: I think\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0the right strategy. It may feel like a lot of\u00a0Olivia\u00a0in one week \u2014 because it is \u2014 but\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0not like\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0a pop star who purposely\u00a0remains\u00a0present and in our\u00a0face\u00a0between albums.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0been a minute since\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0been outside, and\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0got\u00a0an updated\u00a0aesthetic and sound to\u00a0alert the\u00a0general public\u00a0of. And, for what it\u2019s worth, they\u2019re mostly real boots-on-the-ground promo tactics \u2014 and I could never get tired of that in this digital hellscape.<\/p>\n

\n\tAnnie Harrigan: In today\u2019s fast-paced trend cycle where audiences forget things quickly, I think Rodrigo continuously popping up in these different spaces is a super fun way to keep fans engaged, promo the single and just build excitement for the album to come. I think those types of promotional tactics are always great (maybe in part because it gives me something to write about as a music news writer).<\/p>\n

\n\tHowever \u2014 and people might hate me for this one \u2014 I\u2019m getting variant fatigue. I actually don\u2019t think we need three, four, five different versions of the same song or album. This, of course, doesn\u2019t include remixes where new verses or features are added and there\u2019s a real difference between the original and new version. But when it\u2019s practically a copy-paste of the OG work just with a slightly different title, different video or different cover art, I think it\u2019s doing too much and, to me, reads as a ploy to drum up streams.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tLyndsey Havens: I love it all and think it\u2019s a super fun and engaging way to launch an album cycle \u2014 I also think we have to consider the title and what potentially inspired these songs \u2026 and in doing that, it feels quite natural that\u00a0Olivia\u00a0would\u00a0want\u00a0to be out and about and quote unquote moving on. So no, I don\u2019t think it\u2019s too much at all. But I can\u2019t help imagining how more of a roaring song like \u201cGood 4 U\u201d would have sounded alongside Addison at Coachella or stripped down at an open mic in Brooklyn \u2026 I\u2019m not sold that \u201cDrop Dead\u201d was the\u00a0right\u00a0song for these surprise appearances, but hey it\u2019s clearly working.<\/p>\n

\n\tRebecca Milzoff: It does feel like \u2026 a lot \u2014 especially for a single that does not feel like a radical departure or reintroduction \u2014 and pretty squarely aimed at making this No. 1 debut happen.\u00a0It also feels worth noting to me that in fall of last year,\u00a0Olivia\u00a0parted ways with her longtime team at Lighthouse Management and now has an in-house executive team; that could mean we\u2019re seeing more of her new managers\u2019 strategy here, or even more of\u00a0Olivia\u2019s input. Regardless, whether joining Addison at Coachella, showing up at Pete\u2019s Candy Store in Brooklyn or running through Versailles in 10 different ways, she does look like she\u2019s genuinely\u00a0having fun!<\/p>\n

\n\tAndrew Unterberger: I\u2019ll be the 18th person to say that it\u2019s been \u201ca lot\u201d of Olivia \u2014\u00a0certainly more than I expected. But then again, given some recent trending towards big artists not releasing any advance songs from an album, I do appreciate an artist who really commits to a lead single and gives it the full push. And hey, shout out Pete\u2019s Candy store; always cool when a massive pop-rock star shows up to perform at a venue where you played team trivia a few months back. <\/p>\n

\t\t4. What\u2019s one hope you have for the full\u00a0Pretty Sad\u00a0album once that arrives in June?\t<\/p>\n

\n\tKyle Denis: I\u2019d\u00a0love to hear a\u00a0Born To Die-esque ballad from\u00a0Olivia\u00a0on this new album. Something\u00a0really grand\u00a0and cinematic with\u00a0robust strings and synths,\u00a0maybe with\u00a0a trap breakdown in the second half just because. Let\u2019s hear her really explore her lower register while we\u2019re at it. Someone\u00a0call\u00a0up Emile Haynie!\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAnnie Harrigan: I don\u2019t expect it to happen considering the trend she\u2019s set so far with her past two albums, but it would be cool to see Rodrigo have a feature or two on\u00a0Pretty Sad. I think she has an incredible voice, and I would love to see how that voice would play with someone else\u2019s, especially another powerhouse vocalist, in a duet. Chappell Roan did backing vocals for Rodrigo in the past, I\u2019d love to see the two of them shine on a track together, written with Rodrigo\u2019s pen.<\/p>\n

\n\tLyndsey Havens: Give us Ragerigo. I would love at least one song that totally goes off and shows the other side of sadness (anger), especially when we know\u00a0Olivia\u00a0can deliver that so well with crushing guitars and angsty wails.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tRebecca Milzoff: I\u2019m a lady of simple tastes when it comes to\u00a0Olivia: she could probably continue churning out \u201990s-channeling pop-rock forever and I\u2019d be totally on board, it\u2019s a thing I am very into and that she excels at! But I\u2019m intrigued by the potential influence of her new bud Robert Smith and the \u201cJust Like Heaven\u201d reference in \u201cDrop Dead\u201d as possible hints at where the album could go.\u00a0 If this album is indeed going to trace the narrative of a relationship, as rumors have had it, few bands portrayed everything from first-blush romance to total heartbreak and despair as well as The Cure; I wouldn\u2019t be mad at hearing that aesthetic influence throughout.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAndrew Unterberger: Too greedy to ask for a meeting of the Olivias? (Dean sounded pretty good on another recent hit rock collab<\/a>.) Failing that, I\u2019d love to hear more of the Joni Mitchell-inspired sound she teased on \u201cGirl I\u2019ve Always Been\u201d from the Spilled deluxe edition of Guts. <\/p>\n

\t\t5. More than 25 years into the 21st century,\u00a0Olivia\u00a0Rodrigo is still the only artist born after Y2K to notch multiple No. 1 Hot 100 hits. Who do you think might be the first to join her in that club? \t<\/p>\n

\n\tKyle Denis: I think the most obvious answer\u00a0is\u00a0Billie Eilish but\u00a0given Tate McRae\u2019s recent blockbuster tour and pop radio domination, I could see the Canadian sensation notching her second No. 1 hit first.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAnnie Harrigan: First of all, I was today year\u2019s old when I learned this fact about Rodrigo; I assumed Billie Eilish also would\u2019ve had multiple No. 1 hits by now. And I do think if anyone is going to join Rodrigo, it\u2019s going to be the 10x Grammy and 2x Academy Award winner.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tLyndsey Havens: I think Tate McRae could get there, for sure. I\u2019m also going to throw Sombr\u2019s name into the ring \u2026 Sure, he still needs to do it once, but I think after he unlocks that top spot, he\u2019ll become a repeat visitor in no time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tRebecca Milzoff: It\u2019s surprising to learn that Billie Eilish only has one, but my money would be on her.\u00a0 She\u2019s had seven Hot 100 top 10 hits, including \u201cBirds of a Feather\u201d and \u201cTherefore I Am\u201d both reaching No. 2 and \u201cLunch\u201d No. 5, so she\u2019s no stranger to being in the vicinity of No. 1. Add to that her prolificness and perpetual presence in major awards conversations \u2014 her Grammy wins in particular are starting to feel inevitable \u2014 and it seems like only a matter of time before more No. 1s follow.<\/p>\n

\n\tAndrew Unterberger: Tate McRae and Billie Eilish are both strong bets, but my money\u2019s on the former being more driven to actually get it done. And though she\u2019s had a No. 1 already, it was with a feature appearance on a Morgan Wallen song; I\u2019m betting she\u2019s properly motivated to get one with her name starring solo on the marquee. <\/p>\n
