The search for dozens of bodies drives My Killer Father: The Green Hollow Murders<\/a> \u2014 but by the end of the three-part Paramount+<\/a> docuseries, the biggest question isn\u2019t where they are. It\u2019s whether they were ever there at all.<\/p>\n

The series centers on Lucy Studey McKiddy, who claims her late father, Donald Studey, murdered scores of women and forced her, as a child, to help dispose of the bodies. It\u2019s a story that sounds almost too extreme to believe \u2014 something director Aengus James<\/a> admits he wrestled with from the start. \u201cI had a very hard time believing Lucy,\u201d he tells Gold Derby. \u201cI\u2019m really distrustful of people, and I think people lie. I\u2019m not a conspiracy theorist.\u201d But the deeper he dug, the more complicated the story became \u2014 and the harder it was to walk away.<\/p>\n

The case first caught his attention when it made national headlines, but it wasn\u2019t the claim of \u201cdozens of women\u201d that hooked him. It was the pattern surrounding Donald Studey\u2019s wives. \u201cWhat really stuck for us immediately was that there were these three wives,\u201d he says. \u201cAll died, and he had made the 911 call for all three of them.\u201d Two were ruled suicides. A third raised questions. And when James realized law enforcement wasn\u2019t actively investigating, the project shifted. \u201cWe were in this position of, well, do we really become the investigators in this story?\u201d he says. \u201cIf we weren\u2019t going to do this, it might not happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

That decision pushed the filmmakers into unusual territory, including helping fund the exhumation of one of Studey\u2019s wives. \u201cIt crossed every line for sure,\u201d James admits. \u201cNot a place I\u2019m used to being.\u201d But without that step, he says, \u201cthere was going to be no real investigation.\u201d It also helped answer a key question before taking the project out to networks. \u201cI really needed to know if there was a there there,\u201d he says. \u201cI didn\u2019t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the center of it all is Lucy \u2014 a compelling but deeply polarizing figure whose testimony drives the series even as it raises doubts. \u201cShe\u2019s been told her whole life she\u2019s a liar,\u201d James says. \u201cSo in some ways, giving her voice was just amazing.\u201d But working with her was far from simple. \u201cA lot of it \u2026 was absolutely infuriating,\u201d he says. \u201cShe\u2019s incredibly demanding, incredibly distrustful.\u201d<\/p>\n

That tension boils over at the end of Episode 1, when Lucy suddenly explodes in anger \u2014 a moment that forces viewers to reassess her credibility. For James, it wasn\u2019t new. \u201cWe were really on the receiving end of a lot of anger,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was like a switch \u2026 exactly the way people described her dad.\u201d That parallel is hard to ignore: a man widely described as charming, but volatile and violent. At the same time, James is careful not to reduce Lucy to that moment. \u201cWhat\u2019s not disputed is how much trauma is there,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Still, separating trauma from truth proves difficult. Lucy\u2019s memories are vivid \u2014 including being asked to dump lye into a well as a child, not fully understanding what she was doing \u2014 but often lack verifiable details like names or confirmed victims. \u201cLucy\u2019s very sure of things until they turn out sometimes not to be true,\u201d James says. \u201cBut she\u2019s also equally sure of things that\u2026 in my mind are definitively true.\u201d<\/p>\n

If Lucy believes her father was a serial killer, her sister Susan is just as certain the entire story is fabricated. \u201cOne person believes their father is responsible for dozens of deaths,\u201d James says. \u201cAnd the other looks you in the eye and says, \u2018He never even had a temper.\u2019\u201d Navigating those opposing realities became one of the documentary\u2019s biggest challenges. \u201cIt was really confusing\u2026 for both to be seemingly at times inaccurate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other accounts only deepen the ambiguity. A man eventually comes forward claiming he helped Studey carry a body into the woods, though he can\u2019t identify the victim. Studey\u2019s sister Marilyn \u2014 who once fiercely defended him \u2014 delivers what she calls a \u201cdeathbed confession,\u201d backing up parts of Lucy\u2019s story while also making sweeping claims of her own. \u201cShe believed he killed two people,\u201d James says. \u201cBut also believed he might have killed a hundred.\u201d<\/p>\n

That escalation speaks to the mythology surrounding Studey. Stories about the \u201cMonster of Green Hollow\u201d circulated for decades, long before Lucy spoke out. \u201cWhat of this is legend and what of it is true?\u201d James says. Even Studey himself may have encouraged the lore. \u201cHe would love this,\u201d James adds. \u201cHe loved the lore around him \u2026 in a really perverse way.\u201d The result is a case where fact, memory, and exaggeration are nearly impossible to untangle. \u201cI don\u2019t think his own children have any idea what the difference is,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd I don\u2019t know if we ever will either.\u201d<\/p>\n

The investigation itself yields little concrete proof. Despite days of excavation, the team is unable to locate the well Lucy insists contains bodies \u2014 or any remains at all. \u201cIt was incredibly frustrating,\u201d James says. Historical records confirm wells once existed on the property, but the terrain has changed significantly over time. \u201cWe know there were over 20 homes up there \u2026 and these wells were about a hundred feet deep,\u201d he says. \u201cWe maybe just needed one more day.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lack of answers raises another question: was something overlooked \u2014 or ignored \u2014 decades earlier? The series touches on the possibility of a cover-up, though James leans toward a simpler explanation. \u201cI tend to believe that this was incompetence,\u201d he says. \u201cThey didn\u2019t cross records \u2026 they didn\u2019t look into it further.\u201d More broadly, he points to systemic bias. \u201cIt was a different time,\u201d he says, noting that documented abuse often went unpunished and allegations from women weren\u2019t taken seriously. \u201cI tend to agree with what you said,\u201d he adds, acknowledging that authorities may have simply believed Donald over the women accusing him.<\/p>\n

Still, there are lingering unknowns, including a 612-page FBI file on Donald Studey that remains unreleased and accounts from family members who say they were told to \u201cleave it alone.\u201d For James, those details keep the door slightly open. \u201cI don\u2019t believe there\u2019s some big wide cover-up,\u201d he says. \u201cBut what if there is something there?\u201d<\/p>\n

That uncertainty comes to a head in the final episode, when Lucy and Susan confront each after Lucy’s quest to prove her father is a serial killer comes up short. The scene is chaotic, emotional, and revealing. \u201cI kind of called it the \u2018Jerry Springer\u2019 moment,\u201d James says. But beneath the shouting, he saw something more telling. \u201cThrough that \u2026 there was a lot about each of their positions that came out.\u201d He encouraged the confrontation, knowing it might force both women to engage directly. \u201cIt was very easy for them to stick with their stories in isolation,\u201d he says. \u201cWhat happens when they press each other?\u201d<\/p>\n

In the end, the divide between Lucy and Susan doesn\u2019t come down to what may have happened \u2014 but what can actually be proven. After years of defending her father, James says even Susan began to show signs of fatigue. \u201cShe\u2019s just exhausted about being this lone person who defended her father,\u201d he says, recalling a moment after hours of confrontation when her resolve finally wavered.<\/p>\n

But even then, her position held. \u201cWell, even if he did, you can\u2019t prove anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

At that point, James says, the story stopped being about uncovering the truth and became something else entirely. \u201cIt\u2019s no longer about whether he did it or not,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s about whether or not you\u2019re proving it.\u201d<\/p>\n
