{"id":424393,"date":"2026-04-30T02:02:18","date_gmt":"2026-04-30T02:02:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/424393\/"},"modified":"2026-04-30T02:02:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T02:02:18","slug":"news-irelands-deputy-prime-minister-simon-harris-reveals-he-was-victim-of-deepfake-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/424393\/","title":{"rendered":"NEWS: Ireland\u2019s Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris reveals he was victim of deepfake fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By PAUL O\u2019DONOGHUE, Senior Correspondent<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">SIMON Harris, Ireland\u2019s T\u00e1naiste (Deputy Prime Minister) has revealed how he was impersonated in a deepfake scam video.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the European Anti-Financial Crime Summit (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amlintelligence.com\/asp-products\/european-anti-financial-crime-summit-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">EAFCS<\/a>) 2026 in Dublin, he said that the technology is being used to enable financial crime.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn recent months, a deepfake video circulated online falsely portraying me endorsing investment products that had no basis in reality,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was entirely fabricated, but highly convincing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that is precisely the point \u2014 these scams are becoming more sophisticated, more scalable, and more difficult for people to identify.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A deepfake is AI-generated synthetic media which portrays people or events which never actually happened.
