{"id":424878,"date":"2026-04-30T08:56:21","date_gmt":"2026-04-30T08:56:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/424878\/"},"modified":"2026-04-30T08:56:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-30T08:56:21","slug":"swing-and-sawa-missions-poster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/424878\/","title":{"rendered":"Swing and Sawa missions poster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Solar activity regularly disturbs our planet, producing stunning auroras, but also endangering infrastructure in space and on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Meet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Space_Safety\/Space_weather\/Swing_mission_overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Swing<\/a> and Sawa, two of ESA\u2019s upcoming\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Space_Safety\/Space_weather\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space weather<\/a> sensor\u00a0missions to monitor Earth\u2019s atmosphere and study geomagnetic storms.<\/p>\n<p>Think of Earth\u2019s atmosphere as a layered cake: each layer is affected by space weather in its own way, and each mission will focus on different effects.<\/p>\n<p>Swing will monitor the ionosphere, a layer of the atmosphere that, when disturbed, can disrupt radio signals and cause issues with satellite navigation and communication systems.<\/p>\n<p>Sawa will study the thermosphere as space weather causes it to warm and expand, pushing satellites off course.<\/p>\n<p>Swing and Sawa, along with sensors onboard other satellites and on Earth\u2019s surface, will feed data into space weather forecasts, alerts and other tools.
