The US president “doesn’t feel like [the Russians] are putting enough on the table to end the war,” Vance said, speaking to reporters in North Carolina, adding that Trump believes the war is \u201cvery bad\u201d for Russia.<\/p>\n
This week has seen a dramatic U-turn in Trump’s position on the war, from urging Kyiv to make territorial concessions to insisting it can win back “all of Ukraine in its original form”.<\/p>\n
US officials have suggested that the latest battlefield updates are what changed Trump’s mind, with the president holding meetings with key aides as well as Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky in recent days.<\/p>\n
The Kremlin yesterday flatly rejected what Mr Trump said was the rationale behind his rhetorical U-turn on the war in Ukraine, saying it appeared that the US president had been influenced by Ukraine\u2019s leader and was mistaken.<\/p>\n
In an abrupt shift in Ukraine\u2019s favour, Mr Trump said on Tuesday after meeting Mr Zelensky that he believed that Kyiv could recapture all of its land taken by Russia \u2013 which controls around one-fifth of the country \u2013 and that it should act now, with Moscow facing economic problems.<\/p>\n
The Trump flip-flop was seen by some Russian nationalists as a sign he was washing his hands of the war in Ukraine after his unsuccessful attempts to broker a quick peace deal, noting he had not promised any more US help to Kyiv but had rather placed the onus on Ukraine and the European Union.<\/p>\n
The Kremlin, which says it is keen for better ties with Washington, countered that the Russian economy was stable, despite some problems caused by Western sanctions, and that Russian forces\u2019 slow but steady advance in Ukraine was part of a deliberate strategy, with Kyiv, not Moscow, on the back foot.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs far as we understand, President Trump\u2019s statements were made after communicating with Zelensky and, apparently, under the influence of a \u00advision set out by Zelensky. This vision contrasts sharply with our understanding of the current state of affairs,\u201d Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe fact that Ukraine is being encouraged in every possible way to continue hostilities and the argument that Ukraine can win something back is, in our view, a mistaken argument… The dynamics on the front lines speak for themselves,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Though Russia has continued to grind forward in many areas, it has not made a major breakthrough in Ukraine for some time. Dmitry Rogozin, a nationalist Russian senator, said he believed that the front lines were at an impasse, as parity in equipment, training and morale stalled momentum on both sides.<\/p>\n
Mr Peskov said Russia\u2019s macroeconomic situation was stable, though data released by the Russian economy ministry yesterday showed that the GDP growth forecast for this year had been cut to 1pc from 2.5pc.<\/p>\n

Mr Trump\u2019s description of Russia as a \u201cpaper tiger\u201d was rejected by the Kremlin. Russia was more associated with a bear than a tiger, Mr Peskov told the RBC radio, and paper bears didn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n
Some Russian nationalists saw Mr Trump\u2019s U-turn as bad news for Kyiv.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, Trump suddenly told the world about his love for Ukraine,\u201d Konstantin Malofeyev, an ultra-nationalist tycoon and political influencer, said. \u201cBut the main point… is that the US is washing its hands of the matter. The European Union will pay for everything.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia\u2019s Security Council, said Mr Trump had \u201cslipped into an alternate reality\u201d and predicted he would U-turn again. \u201cThe main thing is to keep flipping his position 180 degrees on every possible issue,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
