alcohol <\/a>when the stewardess came round,\u201d Mr Henderson said. \u201cThey told her, \u2018you can\u2019t have that, we sell alcohol and you\u2019ve had too much\u2019, and confiscated her bottle of whisky.<\/p>\n\u201cShe then just erupted, calling them names, being violent towards them. It was a really bad situation.”<\/p>\n
Cabin crew had warned the woman the aircraft would be diverted if she did not calm down and contacted the cockpit to alert the pilot. At that stage, a man sitting in row five asked the crew if he could intervene and speak to the woman.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe said, \u2018please just give me 30 seconds\u2019,\u201d Mr Henderson said. \u201cThe stewardess said no, we have to divert this plane.\u201d<\/p>\n
The man then arranged for the disruptive passenger to sit beside him, swapping seats with another traveller. For the remaining three and a half hours of the flight, he stayed with her, talking and attempting to keep her calm.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe listened to her, he talked to her, he was completely in control of the whole situation,\u201d John said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe stewardesses couldn\u2019t thank him enough. They kept on saying \u2018you don’t know how much money you\u2019ve saved Jet2 here\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Henderson said the man’s young son also played a key role. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t just him, it was his eight-year-old son. He was talking to the lady as well, trying to help his dad calm her down,” he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was getting out football cards, constantly in conversation with her. When his dad went to the toilet, we asked him, \u2018are you ok?\u2019 and he said, \u2018I\u2019m just helping my dad\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
John described the young boy as an \u201cabsolute superstar\u201d and said the moment was emotional to witness. Many passengers had feared the plane was moments from being diverted, with the crew saying they had been \u201cwithin seconds\u201d of doing so.<\/p>\n
“There were people on that plane who had already been diverted once before for a rowdy passenger,” Mr Henderson said. “No one wants that again. Without him, God knows where we would be.”<\/p>\n
The flight continued to Manchester, where police were waiting on arrival to meet the disruptive passenger. Mr Henderson said the pilot personally thanked the man as he disembarked the plane.<\/p>\n
“He was waiting on the stairs and shook his hand,” he said. “He said, ‘you don’t understand what you’ve done here tonight you’ve been brilliant’ and thanked him for what he’d done for the airline.”<\/p>\n
Passengers applauded and congratulated the man but he left without giving his name.<\/p>\n
“He just got his bag and walked off into the night,” Mr Henderson said. “No one got a picture, no one got his name. Everyone was asking, ‘who is he?’ but he just disappeared.”<\/p>\n
Mr Henderson said the man had cut short a holiday in Turkey and was travelling home with his son to see a sick relative, giving him added urgency to avoid a diversion.<\/p>\n
“For me personally, he got me home so I could see my sick father,” he said. “There were other people with medical needs as well.<\/p>\n
“The reason he was doing what he was doing was because he was going through tough family times himself.”<\/p>\n
He added: “You don’t see people like that. It restored our faith in people, someone helping a stranger like that, completely selfless.<\/p>\n
“I just want to say thank you, not just to him, but to his son as well. They kept that plane in the air so people like me could get home for urgent personal reasons.”<\/p>\n
