{"id":42911,"date":"2025-09-25T16:01:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-25T16:01:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/42911\/"},"modified":"2025-09-25T16:01:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T16:01:08","slug":"garda-pleads-not-guilty-to-causing-serious-injury-to-brazilian-delivery-man-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/42911\/","title":{"rendered":"Garda pleads not guilty to causing serious injury to Brazilian delivery man \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall b-it-article-body__text--left\">A Garda accused of dangerous driving causing serious injury to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/podcasts\/in-the-news\/horror-on-the-m50-shows-ireland-can-be-a-dangerous-place-for-delivery-drivers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/podcasts\/in-the-news\/horror-on-the-m50-shows-ireland-can-be-a-dangerous-place-for-delivery-drivers\/\">Brazilian delivery man <\/a>whose leg was severed at the M50 in 2023 has pleaded not guilty, a court has heard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Jo\u00e3o Henrique Ferreira (24), who had lived in Ireland for five years, had been assisting friends in locating a stolen bicycle when the incident allegedly occurred on a slip road to the motorway in Tallaght, Dublin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Following an investigation by Fiosr\u00fa, the police ombudsman (formerly Gsoc), criminal proceedings commenced against Garda Neil Doyle of Dundrum station.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">He was first summoned to appear at Dublin District Court on May 8th on a charge of dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm at Junction 11, north on the M50 on October 28th, 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The court had ordered the prosecution to provide defence solicitor Liz Hughes with disclosure of evidence \u201cas soon as possible\u201d and adjourned the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">On Thursday, Ms Hughes told Judge Michele Finan that, having received significant disclosure of evidence, she could inform the court that it was a not guilty plea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The officer was present but remained silent during the proceedings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The judge noted the defence position and adjourned the case until January 12th for prosecutors to complete and serve a book of evidence on the defendant and to grant a return for trial order.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Mr Ferreira had returned from Brazil for the proceedings on earlier dates but was not required to address the court.
