{"id":429806,"date":"2026-05-03T06:17:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-03T06:17:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/429806\/"},"modified":"2026-05-03T06:17:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-03T06:17:10","slug":"judge-directs-that-social-farming-course-be-funded-to-support-limerick-orphan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/429806\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge directs that social farming course be funded to support Limerick orphan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AN ORPHAN with a number of previous convictions has become a \u201ccompletely different young man\u201d, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Limerick<\/a> Children\u2019s Court has heard.<\/p>\n<p>The child was in court for damaging a car at Store Street car park, Limerick city in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The boy, 16, who cannot be named as he\u2019s a juvenile, has eight previous convictions &#8211; including intimidation of a witness, possession of a knife, and theft and public order offences.<\/p>\n<p>Solicitor Tom Kiely said the boy was \u201ctragically an orphan since he was a young child\u201d. The solicitor explained that when the child was living with his aunt the relationship became strained and he was left without supervision.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/news\/breaking-news\/2072945\/emergency-services-tackle-blaze-at-take-away-restaurant-in-limerick.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Emergency services tackle blaze at take-away restaurant in Limerick<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The aunt surrendered the boy to a detention facility, and upon his release, he was taken care of by another relative.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Kiely said \u201che was left to his own devices\u201d at the time, but now he\u2019s \u201ca completely different young man\u201d. The solicitor detailed \u201che\u2019s gone from strength to strength\u201d and hasn\u2019t come to garda attention since.<\/p>\n<p>The court heard the young man is supported by a number of services &#8211; and is benefitting from participation at a Social Farming Ireland course.<\/p>\n<p>A probation officer stated there has been \u201ca great improvement in recent months\u201d from the boy.<\/p>\n<p>Referring to the Social Farming Ireland course, Judge Catherine Ryan said \u201cperhaps we should all do it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Ryan heard from the probation officer that the continuation of the Social Farming course is dependent on funding &#8211; which may not be renewed.<\/p>\n<p>The judge asked \u201ccan the court do anything to say funding should be provided for this?\u201d, to which the probation officer replied they can.
