data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201ccommon prosperity\u201d agenda<\/a> at a time of slowing economic growth, a prominent economist has warned.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Offering a rare glimpse into economic distribution beyond official statistics, research by Li Shi, dean of the Institute for Common Prosperity and Development at Zhejiang University, showed that China\u2019s wealth Gini coefficient \u2013 a measure of inequality \u2013 rose from 0.45 in 1995 to above 0.7 in 2023.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The findings \u2013 which also highlight a slowdown in household income growth and a persistently low household consumption rate \u2013 were presented by Li at a Peking University forum in late March, but only made public last week.<\/p>\n<p>Li called for structural reforms to tackle these issues at a time when <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3345615\/china-pivots-investing-people-strategy-growth-engine-switches-gears?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cinvesting in people\u201d<\/a> was designated a priority in the latest five-year plan, following Beijing\u2019s commitment to shared prosperity for all a few years earlier.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">The world\u2019s second-largest economy was \u201cconfronted with challenges in \u2018expanding the cake\u2019 \u2013 including slowing economic growth, weak consumer demand, declining investment momentum and employment pressure \u2013 as well as difficulties in \u2018dividing the cake\u2019, such as persistently high income inequality and the ongoing expansion of the wage-wealth gap,\u201d Li said.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Income growth slowed significantly after 2018, with the average annual real growth rate falling from about 8 per cent between 2013 and 2018 to below 5 per cent between 2018 and 2023, particularly affecting low- and middle-income groups, his research found.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Chinese citizens
