Over the weekend, M.I.A.<\/a> drew massive boos\u00a0during her opening set in Dallas on\u00a0Kid Cudi\u2019s \u201cThe Rebel Ragers Tour\u201d<\/a> after claiming she was \u201ccanceled\u201d after becoming a Republican and making controversial remarks about potential \u201cillegal\u201d immigrants in the audience.\u00a0Update: Cudi\u00a0dropped M.I.A.<\/a> from the tour on Monday, May 4th.<\/p>\n

According to two separate reddit<\/a> posts<\/a> about the May 2nd show at Dos Equis Pavilion, the \u201cPaper Planes\u201d singer first commented about the backlash to her being a Republican. Though M.I.A. cannot participate in US elections as a UK citizen, she followed Robert Kennedy Jr.\u2019s lead in 2024 in endorsing Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been canceled for many reasons,\u201d M.I.A. said, according to one redditor. \u201cI never thought I would be canceled for being a brown Republican voter.\u201d<\/p>\n

As captured in fan-shot videos, M.I.A. said, \u201cI can\u2019t do \u2018Illegal,\u2019 though some of you could be in the audience.\u201d<\/p>\n

When the boos became even louder, she tried to win the crowd back by saying, \u201cI\u2019m illegal \u2014 half of my team aren\u2019t here because they couldn\u2019t get their visa.\u201d<\/p>\n

Multiple attendees claimed M.I.A. appeared to then pipe in fake cheers following the rant.<\/p>\n

On Monday, M.I.A. clarified that she was referring to a song titled \u201cILLYGIRL\u201d from 2010\u2019s MAYA, adding that videos were \u201cgaslighting\u201d her words.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wrote [\u201cILLYGIRL\u201d] on the MAYA LP, a song from 2010,\u201d M.I.A. wrote<\/a> in all capital letters. \u201cI started this intro to the song with the statement saying I\u2019m illygal, and I said my team hasn\u2019t gotten visas yet. Then played a song that had lyrics saying, \u2018Fu&% the law,\u2019 which I still believe, if the law is unjust, f@%& it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo not gas light my words. That is the work of Satan,\u201d she continued. \u201cI wrote Borders and Illygal and Paper Planes before you thought immigrant rights were cool. I\u2019ve had these battles by myself without the help of millions of fans backing me. I don\u2019t need this virtue signal era to all of a sudden erase an entire life I\u2019ve led.\u201d<\/p>\n

In another tweet<\/a>, M.I.A. confirmed that she can\u2019t vote in the US. \u201cDon\u2019t be an agent of division,\u201d she added, \u201c48% of the Latin community voted for Trump. So, are you going to hate them all?\u00a0We must unite to make this country, that everyone wants to live in a better place. If you are easyly [sic] led by rumour, then you don\u2019t see the light for yourself. I pray for your awakening.\u201d<\/p>\n

Best known for the 2007 hit \u201cPaper Planes,\u201d when she sings, \u201cIf you catch me at the border, I got visas in my name,\u201d M.I.A. previously flirted with the anti-vax movement<\/a> in 2020 and launched a clothing line meant to block 5G waves<\/a> in 2024 on Alex Jones\u2019 Infowars.<\/p>\n

She is certainly an odd choice to open for Kid Cudi, who previously told Esquire<\/a> that he \u201ctotally disagree[s]\u201d with his mentor Kanye West\u2019s pro-Trump stance.<\/p>\n
