For seven-time Met Gala<\/a> attendee Jordan Roth<\/a>, each trip up the museum\u2019s vaunted red-carpeted staircase<\/a> is a chance to outdo his previous gauntlet-throwing displays of sartorial drama and whimsy. This year\u2014his eighth\u2014will be no different. To honor the exhibition\u2019s theme, \u201cCostume Art,\u201d<\/a> and the dress code, \u201cFashion is Art,\u201d<\/a> the theater producer and performer will be ensconced in a custom creation by London-based couturier Robert Wun<\/a>: a slate gray velvet dress complete with a sculptural hanger-on attached to his back.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a deeply magical experience to live inside this piece,\u201d Roth told Vogue recently.<\/p>\n

Roth\u2019s look started like most of his outr\u00e9 displays of fantastical fashion\u2014from a place of wonder. \u201cIt always begins with the theme, and what curiosities it sparks in me,\u201d he said. \u201cThis one began with a curiosity about classical sculpture\u2014well, really the multifigure classical sculpture.\u201d While it would have been easy enough to evoke a statue of a single figure\u2014like the traditional Greek kouros, say\u2014Roth wanted two bodies in conversation. \u201cA solo figure is often posing for the viewer, but multiple figures are usually in some kind of heated moment\u2014romance, love, lust, fear, violence. Something passionate is going on among these bodies.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd my curiosity was,\u201d he continued, \u201cwhat would it be like to be a body in that sculpture, to live in that sculpture?\u201d<\/p>\n

The process included a dozen or so sketches to get the secondary, \u201cshadow\u201d figure\u2019s frozen pose just right\u2014an embrace that will change in meaning depending from which angle you\u2019re seeing Roth. \u201cThe ability to really dance together and have a story that evolves was crucial,\u201d he said. Numerous Zoom meetings, fittings, and trials were needed to make sure that both the dress\u2014made from a flowing stretch velvet with an iridescent sheen that resembles the delicate drapes of fabric as it\u2019s rendered in stone\u2014plus the molded being that is attached via a three-strap harness at the waist worked in tandem. \u201cAll the weight is carried at my hips, which is exactly how my Schiaparelli fan dress<\/a> was structured.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roth explains that this is the second iteration of his sculpted shadow, as the first was too heavy to wear.
