The GAA have ripped up the football championship format again \u2014 and 2026 will bring a new knockout-heavy system with second chances, more jeopardy and fewer dead rubbers.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s everything you need to know.<\/p>\n

WHO QUALIFIES FOR THE SAM MAGUIRE?<\/p>\n

A total of 16 counties will battle it out for the All-Ireland title<\/a>.<\/p>\n

They come from two routes:<\/p>\n

1. Provincial success (8 teams)<\/p>\n

The four provincial champions and four runners-up qualify automatically. So that means: Kerry<\/a>, Cork, Galway, Roscommon, Dublin<\/a>, Westmeath, Armagh and Monaghan<\/p>\n

2. League rankings (8 teams)<\/p>\n

The next best eight teams from the National League get in<\/p>\n

That gives us: Donegal<\/a>, Mayo, Meath, Louth<\/a>, Derry, Tyrone, Cavan<\/p>\n

Important twist:<\/p>\n

If the Tailteann Cup champions aren\u2019t already qualified, they jump in \u2014 replacing the lowest-ranked league team. That has given Kildare<\/a> a lifeline even though they were relegated from Division 2 and Down were promoted from Division 3 as champions. Down can moan about their route to an Ulster final being harder than Kildare’s route to a Leinster decider but the rules have been in place for years. Kildare won the Tailteann Cup last year.<\/p>\n

* Keeps the National League relevant* Reduces meaningless group games<\/p>\n
