We don\u2019t know anything about the culprit,\u201d Jung said in a video message \u200bposted by local media outlet Leipziger Volkszeitung.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The police could not provide details on injuries, but \u2060a spokesperson for the mayor said two people were seriously injured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The police \u200csaid \u200cthey \u200bwere conducting an operation in the area and would be providing further updates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A damaged Volkswagen SUV with \u2060a person on top of \u200bthe vehicle was seen speeding through \u200ba pedestrian zone, local broadcaster Radio Leipzig reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The broadcaster cited eyewitnesses as saying \u200cthere were several bodies covered with \u200bsheets as well as a stabbing.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"A medical services helicopter arrives at the scene in Leipzig, Germany, where a car ploughed into people on a street leaving at least two dead and several injured. Photograph: Jens Schlueter\/AFP via Getty Images <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Bild reported at least eight injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Like \u2060other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/world\/europe\/\">European<\/a> countries, Germany has \u2060witnessed a \u200bspate of car-ramming and stabbing incidents in recent years, some of which involved religious or political motivations and some carried out by people with mental health issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Last year, two people were killed in the western city of Mannheim, when a 40-year-old man drove a car into a group of pedestrians, only weeks after a similar \u200cattack on a \u2060trade union demonstration in Munich, killing two and injuring more than 40, many children among them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">In December 2024, several people were \u200ckilled in a car-ramming attack on a Christmas market in the eastern city of Magdeburg.
